This movie is based on the classic t.v. series from the 60's. The show was created by Gerry Anderson and his wife Sylvia. Instead of animation or live action, they used marrionettes, which at the time was quite a revelation in tv. The show was based on the Tracy family lead by the father who is a retired astronaut. With a family fortune, he created a secret organization dedicated to saving the world in times of disaster. This organization was named after the name given to the special space ships they created... The Thunderbirds. There are five major space ships, each piloted by a son of Mr. Tracy. The movie is sort of a prequel to the tv series. It centers around a young Alan Tracy and his freinds and how he is wanting to join the team. All around, it is a good action/ adventure movie.
I bought this movie because I liked the Thundebirds television series of the 1960s. Instead of puppets that were used as the cast, humans played the parts of the roles. Sofia Myles played the very feminine secret agent Lady Penelope. Anthony Edwards of Top Gun fame plays Brains, aka Professor Hackenbacker. Ben Kingsly plays "The Hood", who is set on revenge against the Thunderbirds. The youngest son of the father of Thunderbirds, wishes he could fly along with his family and rescue those who need rescuing. There is scene in the movie where the son shows disrespect to his father and throws a tantrum. The father believes to be a Thunderbird, you can`t cut corners or you need to pay your dues. There are a few profanities, tense moments and some fight scenes in the movie. There is a scene of Lady Penelope drinking what could be a cocktail. I mention this because some reviews mention this as if she was consuming drugs. She is enjoying her drink along a pool and not acting under the influence. Other objectional scenes include her taking a bubbly bath(vital places covered) and a scene where she descretely pulls an underwire from her bra (it was an emergency). A reviewer claims that you could see her nipple through her bath and her suit. I may be conservative on what I watch, but I did not think there was something as objectionable. This movie is something I recommemnd for those who are from the 60s era and for families to enjoy with parental guidance. This movie is PG for the inuendos, violence and profanitity. No one dies in this movie.Read full review
I thought this recent Thunderbirds movie based on the Gerry Anderson 60's TV show was awesome! I think because the movie stayed true to the concepts, characters and Thunderbirds rocket ships it really made it turn out great! Also being that it was a production by Jonathan Frakes(Riker/Star Trek Next Generation)who also directed it was most likely what also made this movie turn out so well. I think if it was done by someone other than Frakes it may have not been as great, but Frakes knows Sci-Fi and he lent his experience to this production which was well done. I am usually critical of remakes as though nothing can can be as good as the original, in this case though it took the main elements of Thunderbirds and made it better by having real people instead of puppets as the characters. All though the puppets were intricate being state of the art electronic puppets in the original series, they were really the part you would laugh at as they were so silly looking compared to the Thunderbirds rocket ships models & special effects which were really the best part of the original series. This DVD being in WIDESCREEN is awesome and has many bonus features including Lady Penelope's FAB 1 Rolls Royce car which actually was made in full size as an actual real car! If you like the original Thunderbirds series then this new Thunderbirds movie is something really worth watching and having in your collection!Read full review
