Krells first integrated amp representing a paradigm shift in both value and sound production for its form factor. Some find this amp aggressive and clinical sounding. Aggressive, perhaps, as it has power to spare and is tremendously revealing. Clinical, perhaps, again its very revealing. It will be essential to pair this with well matched speakers and quality sources and interconnects. I use Polk LSI9 speakers and am quite pleased. The polks have a somewhat smooth laidback presentation and are revealing. The Polks have excellent definition but require high power to drive properly. I had tried two high powered Receivers:Luxman & Harmon Kardon, two integrated amps with high headroom from Proton, a Hafler XL280 with DH110 preamp but this amp provided the best experience detail and sonic character. Soundstage is solid. Bass is very articulate though some have claimed its a bit lean in the mid-bass area which mates well with the mid-bass hump of the polks and complements them well. The midrange is perhaps a bit dry. Due to the Krell's aggressive nature and its high resolution and the resolving nature of the tweeters its playing through, its not without many surprising and delightful sonic air snacks. The high end character of this amp I find both smooth and very detailed and not forward. I normally play my music at 80-90db however I sometime ramp up the sound to a happy 100-115 db. This amp does not disappoint and stays as poised as if it were whispering. Though it it visually small from the front, there is plenty of well behaved and refined grunt to be found within its small chassis. Krell is the undisputed heavy-weight champion of high-end audio from way back. Accuracy to the fullest extent, unlimited power doubling every impedance step, industrial strength. This gear is sturdy and provides an accurate reproduction of sound. The audiophile's dream. Love this gear!
