I am a what you might consider a power user when it comes to technology. Power in my case can be both actual CPU, Memory, SSD, etc. And it can also be the "cool factor". The Surface Book with Performance Base is the closes I have found to blending those two things. While it does not have the latest 7th Gen Intel processor, it is still really fast as an i7. With 16GB of RAM and SSD all functions are zippy. If playing a game you can hear the fan, but that is to be expected in my opinion. It is a pretty heavy device, as the base if full of more battery...which by the way, get's great battery life. I am not sure I am a huge fane of the gap near the hinge when the screen is closed, but that is something I can deal with in such a good looking device otherwise. Oh, and a laptop with a touchscreen is totally the way to go, and natural to use, despite what Apple says :)Read full review

The Surface Book (1) with Performance Base has been an absolutely excellent purchase so far. With the the Surface Book 2 already out and Surface Book 3 rumors circling, the price of the original Surface Book is much more reasonable. Despite being a couple years old, it still runs excellently. I've thrown a couple of "older" games at it, like Fallout New Vegas, and it handles them well enough for my liking. You're not going to get Ultra graphics out of the Surface Book, but it's satisfactory. The screen resolution is absolutely gorgeous though; the text looks ultra sharp. I'm a big fan. For other work tasks like programming, statistical software (e.g. SPSS), etc., the Surface Book really shines for me. I highly recommend getting highest RAM and SDD you can find. It's extremely convenient to not worry about storage space and RAM usage as you install and run a lot of bulky Windows programs on the thing. I've got a couple versions of Visual Studio installed, and it's almost like it's not putting a dent in the storage. I don't use the "gimmicky" features too much. The Surface Pen works nicely, when I need it, which is very, very rare... The pen is sleek and convenient in its own right though. I also don't convert it to a tablet often because I rely on the Performance Base's GPU quite a lot, but the touch screen definitely has its perks. I'm still surprised that Apple doesn't even seem inclined to add a touch screen. It's not *essential*, but it really is a nice feature. Speaking of Apple, one of the big pros for having been a big Apple fan for a long time was being able to use hardware specifically designed for the software, but with the Surface Book, I'd say that MS has finally got me convinced to stay with them for a while. Windows is still not my favorite OS, but given the affordability and power of this device, I can imagine myself sticking with the Surface Book lineup for quite a while.Read full review

I had high expectations for the performance base. I wanted to use it for light video editing with Avid Media Composer version 8. It will do the job, but I need to lower the screen resolution to 1920/1080 and in Avid I need to play back with the lowest resolution for AMA footage and even then it will stop sometimes. All in all it will do the job, but not perfect and only HD, probably not 4k. Keep in mind this laptop has 2 cores, not 4 as my old laptop had. Batterylife is about 5 hours for internet browsing, which is good but much less than they promise. I hate that it comes with all kind of installed software such as Microsoft edge. Despite being critical about this product, I am happy with it and did not return it, so it's good if you know how to overcome certain issues.

This is my second one (spilled pop on first - don't recommend doing that). I love being able to switch from laptop to tablet at a push of a button. If you wish extended battery life you can turn it around and reattach to base (which makes it heavier) or just use the top screen. The back of the screen (top of unit) gets hot but that is to be expected.

I was thinking about getting a MacBook Pro again but I am glad I didn’t This computer is a MONSTER and does way more than the competitors. And besides having a touch screen , a pen, an amazing display, his look is one of a kind with a magnesium body and fulcrum edge. Forget about that competitor and move forward not backward.. I am happy I made the purchase I do not mind the battery as it is always hooked on a charger . Buy it as its price has become reachable.
