I got this because the same author wrote a biography of Julius Caesar that's fantastic. This one, though, is only decent. It's not the author's fault, really. Alexander is just not as compelling. He was basically just an egotistical warmonger. The book has interesting tales, but it's mostly just a log of endless military campaigns against other nations. It gets a tad boring. One little nuisance is that the author does use Alexander's name too much. Alexander this, Alexander that. He should have used more pronouns.

I purchased this book to take a break from mystery / crime novels, and I couldn't be more satisfied. The unbelievably exciting exploits of Alexander the Great reads better than any novel anywhere. Alexander's daring in battle, his intelligence in dealing with the various nations he conquered, his ability to broker political fights, his insight into human psychology are breathtaking in scope. Better yet Philip Freeman's writing style, while remaining historically accurate, reads like a fast-paced novel. Loved the book and finished it's 350+ pages in two sittings. Highly recommended for anyone who loves biography or history.

superb book: very well written, fascinating insight into A’s drive to gain control over much of ancient world, well-drawn portraits of companions and opponents, wide variety of tactics and ability to outthink his opponents. The exact stories are ancient, but A’s leadership skills apply today.
