Soil conditions here are awful. Hard packed red clay with an abundance of rocks and tree roots. The Mantis is a handful but does an excellent job with a little patience. I can't imagine that conditions could possibly be worse. Twenty minutes working back and forth and the hard packed clay was chopped to nice fine plantable soil. Several tips: -Follow the starting instructions in the manual exactly.I own several 'Stihll' power tools and starting the Mantis is easy, 'if you follow the directions'! -My wife is 5'1" and 100 pounds. She's fearless with power tools. She really wasn't able to control this little tiller for more than a couple of minutes. -The manual does not properly address the way the tiller functions around rocks and tree roots. Several times that little sucker jumped 40" in the air. Once you know to expect it, it's not a problem. Again, this is a great tool; sturdy and certainly lives up to our expectations. A hour of experimenting and it reduced everything to nice well aerated plantable soil. Read full review

This tiller is so difficult to use it bucks up out of the ground, my very strong husband could barely control it. I bought it for me to use, but that is impossible. But it tills well between narrow rows and got rid of most of the weeds so I can use a hoe to remove them.

I have owned a small 2-stroke mantis for approximately 20 to 25 years it has been a great little tiller I use it often but now the compression is low and she's getting tired so I ordered a new 4-stroke tried it out yesterday same day I got it runs great kills great very quiet doesn't interrupt anyone in my neighborhood, I think it's well worth the money as long as you know how to operate one!

Friend had one and told me. I had bought a weed eater that could attach a tiller but it cost just as much as the mantis which is wrong. I bought mantis for a better deal. It took a little getting use too working with it. I bought to use around garden plants and wifes rose gardens.

Big Boost to Son’s Growing Gardening Habit Bought this for my son in NC and delivery beat the expectation by a week. He fired it up the next day and showed the results. This little tiller is a beast. Digs like a champ, starts easily and carries around like a shovel (meaning it’s light weight). He’s delighted and I’m delighted. Mantis is a straightforward 2 stroke...not complicated. Just power. The root tines reverse to dig either deeply or more shallow, depending whether you’re preparing ground or working around plants. Easy. Peasy. Effective.
