I bought this book for a book club reading. It was a sensitive study of a woman who didn't do the right thing according to the societietal standards of her time. She was saddled with an inadequate man because she was pregnant and unmarried. His only qualification was that he was a good man though not too bright, who would marry her to protect her family and her name though he was not the father of her first child and all he had to offer was a strong back and the ability to make her pregnant repeatedly. Her husband's inability to provide for her and their family is the foundation of the story. What she did is the substance of the story.
This finely written book tells the remarkable story of Helga Estby and her daughter Clara who, in 1896, walked across America. Linda Lawrence Hunt has done exhaustive research to provide a full, clear picture of Helga and Clara's adventure. Their story is exhilarating, sad, and certainly triumphant and inspiring. Hunt writes well; this is a grippingly told tale.
