Kathryn Lasky creates wonderous, captivating and imaginative insights into the lives of young adolescent girls as they journey through troubles, trials and triumphs unique to their plight. From royalty (Marie Antoinette, Would-Be Queen Elizabeth I) to famous historical figure-ettes (Cleopatra, Queen Mary of Scotland),to pilgrims venturing to the New World, these diary-style novels are expertly woven into informative history lessons, all the while maintaining (often fleeting) young adolescent's interest! In "Journey to the New World," Mem, a twelve year-old pilgrim girl makes the exciting yet dangerous journey on the Mayflower to the new world in 1620. Filled with the excitement of meeting Native peoples there as well as the trauma of a sickness that would take her mother's life, it finishes with the narration of her first year in America. This book is excellent all-year-round reading for any child with an imaginative spirit and curious mind. Highly Recommended!Read full review
The book has a compelling lead. The descriptions are pitch-perfect. Not to mention, the epilogue doesn't state how long the lead lived, but the legacy she left behind. Plus, the research on the Pilgrims has been done and doesn't resemble a Hallmark card.

I bought this book for my 11 year old daughter and she absolutely loves it! She ordered more books in the series as well. If your child likes to read historical fiction, they'll love these "Dear America" books.
