Niacin is one of the best substances for elevating high density lipoprotein cholesterol (the "good cholesterol) and so decreases the ratio of the total cholesterol over high density cholesterol. Another niacin feature is its ability to greatly reduce anxiety and depression. Yet another feature of niacin is that it dilates blood vessels and creates a sensation of warmth, called a "niacin flush." This is often accompanied with a blushing of the skin. It is this "flush" or sensation of heat that indicates a temporary saturation of niacin. If a niacin tablet is taken on an empty stomach, a flush will occur (if it is going to occur at all) within about 20 minutes. If niacin is taken right after a meal, a flush may be delayed. In fact, the flush may occur long enough afterwards that you forgot that you took the niacin! Don't let the flush surprise you. Remember that niacin does that, and you can monitor it easily. These Rugby Niacin Tablets are great. My doctor told me to always get Niacin that makes you flush and these do. This is a great price and quantity. The pills are small and easy to swallow. My wife and I take three a day. This my second bottle and I will always go with this brand.

Like very many people that have tried statin drugs for cholesterol and triglyceride therapy I have a terrible experience with leg pains and other serious side effects that made me believe the cure was worse than the problem. I had to stop using statins. I became aware of Niacin tables and tried them. I gradually moved up to 1500 mg/day and my cholesterol and triglyceride dropped to very acceptable levels and my doctor was very pleased with the results and I was free of the painful side effects of the terrible statin drugs (I had tried 4 different drugs). While there are some issues with niacin they are easy to overcome or prevent. First check with your doctor. Then start slow with one tablet and increase the dosage after about a week. The only side effect will be a flushing or heat flash that may last for a few minutes, but this came be avoided if you take a simple aspirin about 10 minutes before you take niacin. This is much safer, cheaper and actually more effective medicine than stains for me and I think it will work for most people. This bottle is well under $30 and lasts me about a year. I have been using this particular niacin for about 5 years with excellent results. Read full review

My doctor told me to take niacin - 1g twice a day for my marginally high cholesterol. I tried the no-flush or slow release type and saw no change. Taking the nicotinic acid form made all the difference, bringing my test results to where we wanted them to go. I have also read elsewhere that the no-flush variety does not work for chloresterol problems. Just take it near the end of meals to reduce the flush problem.

You can do this. Build slowly up to 500mg of Niacin. This will control cholesterol and especially something called Lp(a). You don't need all the meds the doctors would love to give you. Drugs are for sick people! And it you're not sick. You will be! Here's to your health.
