Clean drinking water is at the top of the list or priorities whether it's a day hike or an emergency situation. I've purchased several Sawyer products before and have never been disappointed in the quality or abilities it provides. For on-the-go this is hard to beat. I compare it to the small and large LifeStraws and there is really no comparison. The small life straw products are a tad smaller but only filter 20-30 gallons. The larger life straws filter more but are larger than the Sawyer Mini. The Saywer Mini beats them by a mile with the ability to filter 100,000 gallons, comes with a straw, squeeze bag and syringe so that you can back flush the filter to keep it clean. Having the squeeze bag, especially in an emergency situation allows you water on-the-go. Best of all, and the second reason I purchased was the size and weight. I can pack them for a day hike or EDC in a sling bag or a woman can easily carry in a purse. It only weighs 2 oz. Simply can't beat it.Read full review

One can use this filter in man ways to filter water. The way it comes, you can attach any bottle with a regular screw-top such as a SmartWater bottle, an EverNew Bladder (the platypus is said to not fit well), or the squeeze bottle that comes with it as the 'dirty' water source, then with a bit of squeezing, you can either drink directly from it... or put it in-line with your platypus if you get some 1/4" id and 5/16" od Food Quality PVC tubing and the right snap-connector on-line that will fit your water bladder to fill a water bladder directly from the drink nozzle. You could even use this tubing to attach a Platypus that opens on the end as a gravity-fed water input (using tubing instead of screwing it right onto the platypus as it doesn't screw-on very well) and a platypus on the clean end and let it drip-fill like you might do with a more expensive Sawyer filter. Dont let the $20 price fool you. This is one of the best filters on the market. Extremely versatile. Extremely lite. You can use it as a squeeze bag filter or as a gravity filter. 80% of the time i use it as a gravity filter. You can cut a hole in a 5 gal bucket and cram some hydration tubing in it and you have base camp filter system. This will thread directly onto a platypus bag. You can cut the bottom off of a old hydration bag or bottle then paper punch some holes on the edge and tie a loop of string to it and make a multi liter gravity system that weighs almost nothing. You can cut a section of your hydration bag line and plug this directly inline and just fill unfiltered water into your hydration bag. back flush it with the syringe at the end of every hike and it will last for years. I will never go back to a hand pump system again.Read full review

Surprised with how clean water tastes using this filter - truly fresh and not tainted - usually give a chemical taste to water but this was great tasting and no chemical taste. Definitely good quality filters !
