This book was a visit to my past as I grew up in north eastern Colorado in the 1940s. Not much had changed. The writing is excellent and tells a good, honest tale of life on the Colorado prairie as seen by a young boy. The father is an excellent role model for parents and children alike. I plan to read more of Moody's books. They are like a breath of fresh air.

Little Britches is one of my top 10 favorite books. I have read it 3 times, soon to be 4:) I purchased the series because I want to read all the other books as well, and found the best deal, out of the 5 or 6 book sites I use, here on ebay. Very happy about that! I have heard it compared to the Little House series, which I have read, but better. It is based on the author's life and is packed full of great teaching moments and timeless advice. THESE are books worth reading and owning and rereading and sharing with family and friends.
I loved reading this story. It is an all American story based upon the author's life as a young boy. I fell in love with the style of writing that I decided to read all of his stories in order. The only thing that I didn't care for was that sometimes the story was a little too detailed and I was ready to move on. This only occurred a couple of times. I bought this book because a friend gave me one of Ralph Moody's other books and I became interested in reading his books in order. I would highly recommend this book to be read alone, as a family, or by any young reader. Boys may find this great reading especially if you enjoy the west and horses.
Ralph Moody does an excellent job of portraying what life was like in a different era. My mom read these books aloud to my brothers and sisters and I growing up. We all loved them. It was a cherished family time experience. There are some great character lessons in these books. I love the morals and values found in the stories and that they are told in such an entertaining and captivating way. Even if you don't consider yourself to be a "reader" do yourself a favor and read these books. If you like the thought of the "good old days" and the simple philosophy of right and wrong you will not be disappointed! I loved them so much I just had to get the series for myself. If I ever have kids I will definitely be reading these books to them!
Are you looking for wonderful family oriented books to read aloud with your children? The whole series by Ralph Moody, starting with Little Britches and culminating with Horse Of A Different Color, is as good as it gets. This book, Little Britches, centers on the time period when Ralph Moody and his family lived on a small sharecropping farm just outside Denver Colorado in the early 1900's. Ralph makes friends with the sheriff, breaks nine toes, learns to be a trick rider at the county fair along with his cowboy friend Hi, experiences the pain of losing someone most dear to him, and is taught life lessons by his father and mother that stick with him (and us) from then on. The characters are among the best defined in modern literature, there is oodles of wisdom and wit, wonderful dialogue, and most especially a portrayal of the value of family relationships that is more than just heartwarming... it makes you want to move right in! If you buy just one book to read to your kids, make it this one.Read full review
