The Bear Cub Scout Book was the manual for youth in the Cub Scouting program, age 9 or 3rd grade (at least at the time of this manual). The book contains information about Cub Scouting & the achievements that are to be performed in order to obtain the Bear Rank (a patch). There are also electives to gain arrow points (more patches) The book has sign-off signature lines & descriptions for the achievements & electives. The book also has color illustrations throughout the book. Achievement areas include woodworking, conservation, American heritage, family fun, games, & religious activities. The electives include astronomy, weather, magic, water & soil conservation, photography, & sports. The 1984 version is not the first or the most recent of Bear manuals. The first version came out in 1930, when Cub Scouting became an official BSA program. There were also versions in 1937, 1943, 1948 (blue cover, BSA catalog #3231), 1954 (blue & brown cover, BSA catalog #3231), & 1967 (brown & orange cover, BSA catalog #3231). The 1980 printing of the 1967 copyright had a Library of Congress Catalog #68-14538 & an ISBN #0-8395-3231-8. Each version has had several printings, due to demand (large number of Cub Scout participants recruited each year). Post-1984 versions include the 1995 revision of the 1984 copyright version (Baloo & flag cover, ISBN 0-8395-3228-8, BSA catalog #33228), the 1998 version (copyright 1998, BSA catalog #33107), & the 2003 version (Baloo hiking cover, copyright 2003, ISBN #0-8395-3451-5, BSA catalog #33451). Many of the various versions, including printings of the 1984 version, carry an attached supplement for parents. In earlier versions it was called "Bear Parent's Supplement, had an introduction to Scouting & information about Drug Abuse. Recent versions are called "How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide" & address that topic specifically. Youth in the program now should use the latest manual. However, the various versions of the youth handbooks (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Lion, & Webelos) have become popular to collect by Cub Scouters.Read full review
I needed the book for the next level of Boy Scouts. The book was current, in excellent condition, and perfect for what I needed.
