The Standard Catalog Of Lionel Trains 1945-1969 is a high quality accurate catalog of Lionel Trains and accessories. It is very very valuable when determining the value of scarce variants. While a paperback, the glossy photos are excellent and the paperstock is very good (it will last). The book is well laid out and easy to use. The prices are a very accurate representation of current values. One of the aspects of this catalog is that is reflects each items relative scarcity which will extend the useful life of this guidebook. I highly recommend this book to all Lionel collectors. The sister guidebook, "Standard Catalog Of Lionel Trains 1900-1942" is also highly recommended.
A good price guide should be well organized and accurate. There are a number of published price guides that are updated yearly. A pictorial price guide comes along less frequently and thus becomes less current, as far as price trends are concerned, as it ages. Fortunately The Standard Catalogue of Lionel Trains 1945-1969 is current (2004) and very well illustrated. It employs a visually appealing price and rarity analysis for each post-war locomotive, freight car, passenger car and accessory. It also contains pricing on catalogued sets, catalogues and paper products such as promotional literature. In addition to providing pricing it includes a historical description with each item to help the collector place it in context as a piece of post-war Lionel history. If you are in the market to purchase a post-war Lionel train or accessory this book will be very helpful. timbuk2002Read full review
This is a very good book on post war lionel trains. It gives production variations of almost every item produced. It has color photos of many items and history tid bits included that are nice. It is not perfect, as some items do not have much listed detail or some may be missing, but the author requests more information, and to be informed of any mistakes, so the book can be continually be made better. I find it worth the e bay price I paid and then some. Would be nice if someone would now publish the same thing on MPC production, and even go up to the present time. I would purchase this book again and recomend it to others.
David Doyle does a great job documenting Lionel's train production from 1945 to 1969.
