Just purchased the MacBook Air for my daughter turning 12 (like she needs one!) and was really concerned about buying one based on online reviews about the hard drive, not really worth the price just for thinness and low weight, and comments about sturdiness. I have to say we just love it! It is also our first Mac and really enjoying it - she loves the photo and video editing functions that come standard on all Macs! Our version does have the 128GB hard drive and all the latest specifications and works great. We considered the MacBook Pro as a better priced option, but the Air is the model she really wanted and I'm not disappointed. Her ability to enjoy it is worth the extra price for us. It was a combination need/want/gift, so eventually paying the extra for her preference was worth it. And, on an everyday basis, the lower weight and ease of carrying it around truly does make a difference! Only drawbacks I can see for us: no camera card port but we just use the usb cable; as often commented it is not a "primary" home/family machine but is great for individual and remote use; the Mac toolbar takes up more space on the screen and I don't think you can make it smaller; need to decide between the Apple or Windows software for word processing program - concerned about compatibility with school; no backspace button!! We were pretty much aware of these drawbacks prior to purchasing and still not disappointed - we'd buy it again! I would be very careful in purchasing one because there are older versions and multiple combinations of features - gets very confusing. I saw lots of lower-priced machines, but when you try to confirm exact specifications and compare, you weren't getting the latest. I think this is important, especially in a used machine, because technology moves ahead so quickly. Bottom line: now everyone in the house wants one!Read full review
Pros: 1. The MacBook Air is arguably the most beautiful computer design ever. 2. It's as light as a feather (well, almost)–half the weight of a MacBook Pro. 3. It's unbelievably thin (the whole computer is thinner than the LID on my old iBook!) 4. The 128GB SSD allows much faster boot up and application loading than a conventional HD does. 5. The backlit keyboard is ideal for low light operation. 6. The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics chip gives fast graphics performance. 7. Built-in iSight camera, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth. 8. Supports an ext. monitor up to 30" Apple Cinema Display 9. It's just a delight to use. Cons: 1. Limited to 2GB RAM 2. Only one USB port (but can accommodate Ethernet wired network with use of USB-Ethernet adapter). 3. 2.13GHz processor is slower than other Mac laptops, but the SSD makes it feel speedier. 4. The battery is not user replaceable. 5. It is relatively expensive (2.13GHz MacBook Air is the same price as the base 15" 2.4GHZ i5 4GB MacBook Pro). I bought this rather than an iPad, because it is about as compact, yet it is a full computer, running a full slate of applications; because it has an iSight camera, and because it allows me to print. I am extremely happy with it, and would make the same choice again. However, I would not recommend it for heavy duty creative work (I have a PowerMac with 6GB RAM and two 24" Cinema displays for creative work).Read full review
Way faster than previous model. If you want speed and power in a small light package than this is it. You don't have to compromise power over weight. The battery life on it is also very reasonable anywhere from four to five and a half hours.
To give up my MacBook with an optical drive, more than one USB port and accessible RAM was a problem with me. Once I got over it and took the MBA out for a spin. I will not go back to the bulky MB Pro. This is light weight, powerful and a great companion to my iMac and does everything I need it to do. Highly recommended!!!
i bought this laptop because i had a macbook, and the screen cracked, and i needed a laptop quickly within my budget and within a short span of time. i was really annoyed when i got it that the previous owner had not erased everything off of it. the laptop had hundreds of personal photos and the previous owner still had there email setup, and the computer was still in their name. also when you go onto the internet; places like facebook and gmail was already logged into their email accounts.
