I had read so many articles bout how the movie does justice to the book, so I decided to pass on the book and go straight to the movie. It was a mistake. As entertaining as the movie is, the book is far far better. Principally it's just bloody funny, Mark Whitney (the Martin) speaks his mind about his successes and failures, usually with some vulgarity, and yet you feel as though you're with him in his journey and in his activities, good or bad. The movie, as they tend to do, is paced for the movie going audience, and loses a lot of the struggles and inventions Mark Whitney has to achieve. I highly recommend this book, and I hope this isn't a spoiler but it's full of NASA type technical terms which occasionally take some understanding from one Martian day (a sol) to another. Great reading, couldn't put the book down,.. Do yourself a favor and read this, on a plane, on vacation or wherever, you'll enjoy it!Read full review

Awesome story, Robinson Crusoe classic set in the space age!! Great account with details that most of us non-technical people think about. Funny and engaging account. Andy Weir has done a great job in his writing.

I first watched the movie, and I absolutely loved it. Usually, it is the other way around; book first, then the movie. But I thoroughly enjoyed both. This book was very well written, Mark Watney is a very lovable character. Andy Weir wrote Watney to be this guy who makes a joke out of everything, even in spite of the situation he is in. I had a hard time putting this book down, it was very captivating. I would recommend reading the book because it has several things that are absent from the movie.

The story really is compelling. But there is one drawback, and that's that it's a bit technical. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the storyline. I also enjoyed the movie, and like people always say, 'the book is way better than the movie,' except that it's the really technical part that gets in the way, hence my 4-star rating instead of 5. Okay, he's a Botanist, and not just any old botanist, but a premo botanist at that. I guess if you're a techy kind of guy, then you won't be mired down in all the techy stuff, so if you ever get stranded on Mars, bring this book along, and it will help you to survive.

GREAT BOOK! ANDY WEIR IS FUNNY AND A SELF-PROCLAIMED GEEK; HE MANAGES TO EXPLAIN SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES SO THAT THE LAYMAN CAN EASILY UNDERSTAND WHAT HE'S WRITING ABOUT. OUR HERO, MARK, IS CAUGHT IN AN IMPOSSIBLE SITUATION THAT, EVEN WITH SOME DEVASTATING SETBACKS, CHANGES IT INTO A POSSIBLE SCENARIO INSTEAD. FABULOUS NAIL-BITER OF AN ENDING!
