I read this book vivaciousy twenty-five years ago, rarely putting it down. I think it's great-- new story with love, honor, justice and evil. No happy ending here, but it sounds plausible no matter what period of history it is applied in. My wife read it as a very devoted Harry Potter fan, after I suggested that magic in England could have roots only through Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table. She read it quickly, and found some agreements in that statement, but honestly found the ending to be much too depressing to let the book be an enjoyable piece of literature.
T.H. White has re-created a favorite King Arthur myth with utterly compelling characters. A beautiful tapestry of human and human spirit. An enchanting take on the Arthur/Excalibar story. Very real human and animal characters.
