So few authors write in such a way that one is drawn into the story, becoming nearly integral to the plot and characters. Hosseini does this in his third and last “movement” that began with, Kite Runner – an exceptional book of a compelling tale and deep human resonance – concluding with …Mountain Echoed. Earn insight into Afghanistan before, during the Russian invasion, and after, including our (U.S.) complex and truncated intercession, through this book and those that preceded it. Share Humanity with the oppressed, the villainized, the refugee of today and of yesterday in its pages. Over my 60+ years of extensive reading, I can think of only two or three authors whose scribblings have stirred me to the level of Dr. Hosseini. I await a fourth book, and will consider this an unfinished symphony until then.Read full review

I enjoyed reading Hosseini again and was a great fan of his earlier books. The Kite Runner was spectacular and a Thousand Splendid Suns amazing but a hard read due to the violence . This was a softer book. Harder to follow and sometimes I got lost. It did not really tie together for me. Nevertheless I stayed with it till the end. We read it for my Book Club. I would have read it anyway. Not sure why it gets the acclaim it does. Perhaps for a younger audience. I am curious how my daughter will review it. She is 29 and read the other two with me years ago and neither of us could put those down...Marie
I recommend it mainly due to the fact his other books were so great. I found The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns were much better. This one seemed to bounce around a lot and at times I didn't know who I was reading about until a couple of pages in. Some characters seemed to have not much to do with the main characters and just caused a bit of distraction. Neither here nor there, it was still a good book but in my opinion, the other too were by far better.

A stunningly well written novel. This man has got to be one of the greatest living writers. Very touching and sometimes emotionally hard to read, but I loved it. His other novels are also great.

What a wonderful read. This is the kind of book one is unable to put down. The everyday tales people of Afghanistan, Europe and the USA face when different cultures are woven together. The tragedies that ensue, often by the mere turn of the world wheel. I highly recommend this read, tears, anger, sadness and understanding of the human element.
