One of the best printers ever made! I like everything about it! Ok so it's not the latest but it is a workhorse! I have had 5 of this type for over 18 years and worked them hard! No ink-jet I have ever had (with the exception of my old HP 1115 Photo printer could take the work load that this printer does in it's life time. Now I have acquired another of this type looking forward to another five years of good work.

I was looking for what I thought would be a reliable monotone printer. I have a MacBook Pro. After receiving the HPLJ4M+ printer, I tried to find a user's manual to show how to hook it up (availability on internet stated by seller). Could not locate. The printer has a serial port and a parallell port, on the Jet Direct card it has an AUI port and a BNC port. I 1st tried a Serial Port to USB cable - nothing. I then tried a Parallel port to USB cable - could get it to print once - print almost inlegible. it then would not print again and showed a code with a number and the word "micros". Next I tried a external HP Jet Direct card (J2591A) that went Parallel port to card that fed the ethernet port on the computer. It printed a "PCL Configuration Page" that was more readable but covered with a gray haze. It would not print anything else. I have not been able to find a AUI to RJ45 Ethernet cable to try the internal Jet Direct Card. I have been advised to forget the BNC connection as if it would work it would be too slow.Read full review
This printer is older yes but it also is very cheap to run. some people don't understand this printer will outlast most new ones even if used. They also are very low maitenence. If you need a low cost b/w printer this one is great. This printer also will hook up to a router with a jetdirect card and can be wireless. Another thing is newer printers have chips on the that will make you buy toner every so often even if there is still toner. The laserjet 4 does not. It is also very easy to be fixed if it ever jams a roller kit can be brought for less then $20 to fix any jam. The cartridge lasts more then 7000 pages and can be had for as low as $17. Most inkjets run 25 cents and above per page for just ink. The laserjet 4 even if you pay full price for toner is less then a penny a page. even new lasers will run 2-3 cents a page and color laser 10 cents a page. The printer can be had for a bargin on ebay when it was new it was well over $1500. It retails at many shops for $200+ used still.Read full review
I have a 1994 model HP Laserjet 4M+ with International Fonts cartridge, 1200page tray, Jetdirect and 128MB RAM. I got the printer in 1998 @ 9800pages. Now (15.01.2011) it's at 127421 pages and still running strong. The fuser usually gives up around 100k pages, fortunately I have a few spares. The toner cartridge is really cheap, and averages around 11000 pages for my use (mostly text, with around 2% images (less than 120kb)). A few paperjams due to drying up rollers is expected. Some "platenklene" fixes those problems. One of the best printers HP ever made I dare to say. All in all a very good printer; low noise, very sturdy and low operating costs.
The pros: This is a workhorse printer, it will handle a small office or home very well, not real noisy like some printers. The stock memory will work but for heavy printing 20-50 pages at a time upgrade the memory. Toner is a cost saver, you can buy toner for around $24-$35 on Ebay. The cons: Not real fast at 12ppm and no color but for general printing its a very good printer. It is built better than most of the newer laser printers out today.
