Alan Brennert is NOT a huge name in comics circles but the few DC stories he wrote have resonated with collectors and fans of the DC characters for years. These are excellent character stories written mostly before the ill-fated 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series that destroyed a much more innocent DC Universe and eliminated quite a few classic characters including a few that Brennert wrote in some of his stories. The best three stories in this book probably concern the Golden Age Earth-2 Batman, the modern-age Batman and the original Earth-2 Robin and Batwoman, and a holiday story featuring Deadman and an unexpected guest star (who was killed during the Crisis mentioned earlier). Most comic books have stale, wooden characterization. That's fair criticism, yes, but it's not true for all of them. The characters definitely feel pain in these stories but they grow, too. Had I paid for these stories in monthly format, I would not have felt cheated. As a hardcover collection, the online price IS a steal. You could pay for more stories in other Batman collection but there are very few that are half as good as this one despite being a thinner volume with "only" nine stories reprinted inside.Read full review
