the sneaky Chef simple strategies for hiding healthy foods in kids favorite meals Missy Chase Lapine New York Times bestseller. If you think your kids will never eat anything healthy think again!
Product Information
Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will "give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for "kiddie" favorites-often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies. Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef , Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of "Sneaky" recipes include: No Harm Chicken Parm Power Pizza Incognito Burritos Guerilla Grilled Cheese Brainy Brownies Health-by-Chocolate Cookies Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)

There are alot of similiarites in these books but some differences. For instance, The Sneaky Chef is written more like a novel than a cookbook. Such as, it is a thick paperback with very few pictures and there is a tremendous amount of information. It is interesting but I have a two year old and a six month old so I have not had time to read it all. The recipes are a bit more complicated but they do seem more nutritious. The Sneaky Chef has flour blends and bean blends instead of just fruit and vegetable blends like Deceptively Delicious. Deceptively Delicious is spiral bound with lots of pictures so it is great to cook with. Also the recipes are very easy and healthy but not as nutritious as The Sneaky Chef. So if you are willing to do a little bit more work go with The Sneaky Chef. If you are strapped for time but still want your kids to eat healthy go with Deceptively Delicious.

I bought this book because I have an extremely picky 4-year-old who refuses to eat anything that might be a vegetable. I followed the recipes in this book for several vegetable purees, which were really easy to make and store. They are also easy to incorporate into recipes. I was amazed when she actually ate mac n cheese with pureed carrots and sweet potatoes hidden in it. She also ate the chicken fingers with wheat germ and wheat bread coating. So some of these recipes are a huge success. Some, however, are a little far out - the brownies made with spinach and blueberry puree, for example, were pretty icky. And my daughter didn't like the chocolate chip cookies with white bean puree, although I thought they were good. So basically, I think this book has a lot of good ideas for picky eaters, but some are just too wierd. I do recommend giving it a try.

I do however love the idea and she gives step by step directions on how to puree everything. She also gave me great ideas about what you can hide in different foods. I've tried a few recipes, but my kids didn't want to deviate from the things they were used to, so I just started using her method with my own recipes. Last night I served spaghetti with ground turkey, pasta sauce from a jar with 1/2 cup carrot puree and an extra can of tomato sauce. I served it over whole wheat noodles and my family was none the wiser. I was smiling all through dinner as my picky two year old had 2 helpings. Thank you Missy.

I purchased this to be able to hide the healthy foods that most of my grandchildren seem to dislike into the foods that they love. One has Asperger's and is so difficult to get him to eat much of anything. Foods that compliment one another and help the absorption of vitamins and minerals are combined for max benefit. She uses methods like pureed foods, combining unrefined and refined foods (ex. flours), foods you can hide easily, substituting juices and broths in place of water, alternate cooking method so foods aren't fried, less toxins and fats, foods to replace high fat ones, foods to help with blood sugars, making food appealing, flavor "decoys" and texture "decoys". She provides make-ahead recipes as well to save time. Some recipes samples: Choc Chip Pancakes, Breakfast Ice Creams, Quick Fixes for Oatmeal, Breakfast Cookies & Milk, PB & J Muffins, Grilled Cheese Muffins, Masterful Mac & Cheese, Quick Fixes for Tuna Fish Sandwiches, Pigs in Healthy Blankets, Creative Cream of Tomato Soup, Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup, Quick Fix for Ranch Dressing, Cheesy Animal Crackers, Frozen Applesauce, Grab 'n' Go Crispy Granola Bars, Triple-Stuffed Potatoes, Crunchy Chicken Tenders, Maxed Out Meatloaf, Magic Meatballs, Gotta Lotta Lasagna, Total Tacos, Power Pizza, Hi-Fi fish Sticks, Crispy No-Fry Fries, Bonus Burgers, Sneaky Baked Ziti, and Mystery Mashed Potatoes. Treats include Quick Fixes for Jell-O, Popsicles, Unbelievable Choc Chip Cookies, Health-by-Chocolate Cookies, Brainy Brownies, Incredibly Improved Icing, Choc-ful Donuts and Cupcakes, Thumbprint PB Cookies, and Sorbet. Healthy drinks are included such as Milkshakes, Flavored Milk 3 Ways, and Hot Cocoa. Each section has many more recipes and also quick fixes for prepared foods. You can learn to change you favorite recipes to make them healthier with the ideas that she provides. A fun read and my next will be her other cookbook for hiding healthy foods on the man in the house. I highly suggest this book for families with picky eaters and especially those with autism.

There's a bit of biography here, with background as to how the author invented these ideas and I've been pleasantly surprised by her candor in trying to get her kids to eat, including all the manipulation she tried before "sneaking" in the good stuff. I actually read some parts aloud to my husband, including some of the recipes, and although he thinks it'll be great for the kids, he's a bit wary of putting spinach in his pancakes. I can't wait to try though, and maybe he won't even notice! I love the ideas, some of which I never even dreamed of like sneaking veggies into milkshakes and cupcakes, and all the different substitutions for water in making oatmeal or boiling potatoes. Genius! It's a must read, although I doubt I'll be a fanatic about sneaking veggies into every single meal-- that's a lot of pureeing!
