Glory Road is a great movie choice for Sports Movie Fans. Many other reviewers of this title have compared it to Remember the Titans (whose producer is also the produce of this title). If you're a football fan, you will find this movie mediocre compared to Remember the Titans; if you lean more toward being a basketball fan, this movie will rock for you! If you're a middle of the road kind of fan, this movie will be a good one but it will not be on your top ten list. Lastly, don't watch this movie if you know the actual "true story." I'm a huge fan of "true stories" and, unforutnately, knew the actual tale to this saga. Knowing that, I was very, very disappointed in how everything was portrayed in this movie. Then again, it WAS a DISNEY movie; so I guess much of it had to be cleaned up. Especially so the coach Don Haskins (played by Josh Lucas) could be a real hero to his boys. My advice: if you know THE TRUTH, don't watch because it'll be a huge disappointment. If you don't know the real story: it's worth watching and makes an excellent family movie.Read full review
Possibly one of the greatest sports stories yet it has just recently been told. Lucas was very good in his biggest featured role yet. Not quite as good as the story on paper. A little too black and white, no pun intended. But maybe doesn't delve into the gray areas of the feelings of what was going on. A little too focused on the black players families in the movies. Could have gone into the white players a little more. This movie at times is about the underdog, but at other times about race. Never really makes up it's mind what direction it wants to go. Gets more powerful and amazing though the more you watch. it. A must own for a sports DVd collection though.
Glory Road I'm not a huge basketball fan or football fan (I'm a hockey fan) but basketball and football seem to be the sports that make the best movies. The cast is great, the acting and intensity is superb, and when they show clips of the actual game during the credits you really appreciate the effort the Cast and Crew put into making the Basketball scenes as realistic as possible. Glory Road is great from the get go, it's funny, heartwarming, and inspiring. Josh Lucas is awesome as CoachHaskins and Jon Voight is great as Coach Adolph Rupp. Derek Luke is just a good in this film as Bobby Joe Hill as he was in Friday Night Lights as Booby Miles. When you see the team photo at the end of the movie you realize how much work was put into finding the right actors to play the roles. Final Verdict: 5/5 Rent or Buy?: If you're a fan of true sports stories, sports movies in general, or basketball Glory Road belongs in your collection. This was a great no, excellent movie that shows how life really is and not sugar coat the problems of our society. It is sad to say that this problem still exists, but we can learn from this and live together as one (the human race). This movie has a deeper message other than breaking the race barrier, there was no profanity that is associated with Black men and women taking on leading roles. I was amazed finally a movie to show our children without ff or skipping scenes. A class act and if we a people could see the big picture, that we all live on one planet and have to get along. Look at what is happenning to the family of our day or should I say what's left of the so-called family, we need commercials to tell us to eat together as a family and communicate, so sad and look at the product of the disfunctional family, drug use on a scale that it doesn't surprise us to hear of a 10yr old taking crystal meth or killing, raping or drinking. Look at this DVD of Glory Road for a deeper message and apply what it stood for Love, Togetherness and Devotion. We look at ourselves as being the more sophisticated society, then splatter the media with scenes of mass killings of people strapping bombs to a car, themselves or worst yet a small child and we say we believe in God (in this movie they prayed together asking for the strength to make it through whatever trials that lay ahead of them) even if you don't believe in God or religion, try to find a bible and just read 1st Peter 4:1-6; 1st John 1:9-11; 4:1-21; 1st Corinthians 13:1-8 and these last 2 are in front of the UN (United Nations)building with a statue and the words of Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3,4, now if we could follow and live our lives as the words in the bible speak we would not see 2nd Timothy 3:1-5. Now if we made more movies like this and the title speaks volumes "GLORY ROAD" hats off to all who played a role in making this film, for every great film like this there are 1000 or more that are depicting every negative aspect of society, drugs, murder, rape, child pronography, sadistic horror flixs, hate and the list goes on and on. GLORY ROAD should win an award, but it is not violent enough, bloody, sexual or not enough profanity. There are so many things in life that are positive and beautiful for our children to watch and learn from, I hope that directors, writers and actors and actresses stand up and demand a better quality of movies instead of quantities and money. GLORY ROAD a very rare film, thank you for the positive, clean and upbuilding movie.Read full review
IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD THE CHANCE TO SEE GLORY ROAD -do yourself a favor and dont miss the excellent history lesson and great movie . I dont really care for basketball from a womans perspective -but I loved this movie . I saw the previews on another movie and somehow missed this one on the new release shelf. Hubby and I loved it so much we let our little boys who jsut studied MARTIN LUTHER KING in school watch it . it is very important to let our kids know our history . The predjudice that plagued this team was just Ugly . You really felt for Haskel and his negro team . But more importantly were the triuphant victories in the personal lives of these players . this is a heart felt underdog -movie . these guys really went through alot to get to where they were going . great lesson for kids in determiniation and dicipline. I would own this movie . great addition to any dvd library. Loved the characters and the whole 1960's feel . You really feel like your there .....Loved the characters -they were all believeable and I would liek to see the guy who played coach haskel in more stuff -what a great actor !!! he studied his character !! and was believable - one the best MOVIES WE HAVE SEEN ALL YEAR !!!!Read full review
