Due to the season I have only had limited use of this but I have a number of Penn reels and am well familiar with their operation. I like everything about this reel. So far I have 20lb braid on it with 10lb mono leader for bait fishing in weedy creeks on a 7' one piece medium rod. It handles fantastic has a super smooth and precise action and just feels quality all around. The best thing is it's not heavy or clunky but still all metal for getting banged around a little. It also has no extra buttons or levers which is exactly what I want. This reel casts very nice but if you're into distance with medium lures the 5500 Spinfisher casts farther and unravels great on a medium 9' rod. Tight lines! Dave

This is my second battle ii 3000 and i use it for competition fishing using light bobbers and fishing from wadding positions using very thin lines (0,005"-007"). at this size it is not a reel to drag a big fish up and out of the water to a height (as when fishing in cliffs) but anything around 2lbs i am confortable with it. the reel is prone to yielding windknots if the reel is spooled with too much line (the line capacity indicators on the spool seem to indicate to fill between the two lines, but i find it more confortable to spool near the first line to avoid wind knots). because of this, you don't have a smoother line release on casting which can compromise distances a bit -- the wider the spool the freer the line release). this aside, i like this reel and just wished it came with an extra spool to give me a bit more range of utilization.Read full review

My most difficult decision was which model of the Penn Battle II line would best meet my needs. I am a freshwater fisherman now expecting to do some pier fishing in the Gulf of Mexico over the winter months. After reading numerous comments, I felt that the choice was between the 3000 and the 4000. I don't think that it would make too much difference and I was sure the 5000 was more than I needed and the 2500 would be a bit small. At this point, I find that the reel is beautiful and has a very smooth retrieve. It appears to be a good match for the new Okuma saltwater rod with which I am pairing it. Only time on the water in January will determine my true level of satisfaction, but I would be surprised if I don't love this reel.

This is a great little reel! I bought it to use for flounder and other inshore fish, but it will handle most anything within reason both in and off shore. 5 pound Spanish Macks, no problem. 10 pound reds, no problem. Spooled with the proper line and drag setting, this little beauty will be a great addition to anyones rod and reel arsenal. I highly recommend it.

I've replaced all my spinning reels with Penn Battles. I bought these because they will last a lifetime. I have one 5000, one 4000, two 3000s and one 2500. I don't fish saltwater but figured if they would hold up to that environment they should work for me forever. You won't find a better reel and I've had expensive reels with bells and whistles that nobody needs. These are simple, high quality tools. As someone once said. If you buy cheap reels you probably won't ever see the fish of a lifetime.
