This knife has quite a name to live up to. Gerber, who has been making knives well for quite a while, Bear Grylls, noted survival expert, Ultimate, claiming there is none better and Pro, for professional users. Does it? The first two, yes, that latter two, not so much. This knife is put together with the quality of Gerber and has a number of features which will indeed appeal to survival-minded folks, so might well have more of Bear Grylls in the design than just the name. The steel is a pretty good mid-grade steel, but there are better (high-grade) steels. The design of the knife is very good, with an excellent blade shape, very good grip and the useful hammer face pommel. My only complaint about the knife is that the jimping (notches) on the thumb ramp are so smooth that they don't provide adequate slip resistance to the thumb. The sheath could of been pretty impressive as well, being quite sturdy, and having a built in carbide blade sharpener as well as a holder for the ferrocerium (fire) rod. There is a pocket at the top for some waterproof survival suggestions. Unfortunately, the belt loop is just a piece of 1" webbing sewn to the back, which means if a short seam lets loose, your knife could be gone. And this is not desirable in a survival situation. If only this had a reliable way to fasten to your belt (and perhaps other gear), this could have been an excellent sheath. In its price range, this is a decent survival knife. If you go for one, make sure you get the "Pro" model, because there is an earlier, cheaper, Ultimate model which although it looks similar, uses a low grade steel and is not full tang, so would be a poor choice to bet on in a life or death situation. Would this be my first choice of any knife available? Certainly not, there are better knives, at a significantly higher cost. Would it be my first choice at it's price point? If it had a reliable belt loop, maybe. I haven't tried all the major competitors yet...Read full review

Product would be alright, if it were the product that I expected to receive based on photo and description.

This is about the best knife you’re going to get for the price. You can absolutely thrash on this thing, it it won’t hurt it a bit. It’s right up there with knives like the cold steel srk, and others. You can baton with it flawlessly, it’s pretty well balanced. And the steel is a perfect blend of softness. You will. Or break this knife! I enjoy this knife so much, that I bought each variation, the straight edge, and the serrated. The serrated is perfect for any type of job you throw at it. But the straight edge is the one thing I’d want in a survival, bush craft, or extended hiking trip.

This is by far the best knife I have ever owned! I am a serious backpacker and heavily depend on my knife when operating out in the forest. I have had many knives over the years but none have provided the durability and resources this Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro knife does. With the Ferro rod, whistle, survival guide and knife sharpener on the sheath, I can throw it on my belt and head out comfortably even for simple day hikes! This knife is a workhorse and has continued to perform flawlessly after heavy abuse. I would recommend this knife to anyone not looking to spend a fortune yet looking for a strong durable knife that will run with the best of them!
