Films like Sixteen Candles personify what the eighties was all about. And if you were a child of the 80s, you will probably identify with this film a lot more than the now younger generation. The story is simple enough, but it works so well. Molly Ringwald is particularly likable in this, and she is almost irreplaceable in her part. There are heaps of familiar faces, including small parts from many of the present day 'movie stars' ie John Cusack, Joan Cusack and Jami Gertz. It's kind of daggy though, and when you tell people you watched it their response is usually "Oh My God. That is so OLD." But that's what I like about it. If you want to watch a film that reflects the eighties, forget the nostalgia trips of The Wedding Singer and Romy and Michelle. Hire a true eighties product, such as Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, St Elmo's Fire.... The list goes on and on.Read full review
A rare case of a romantic comedy that I enjoyed despite not one single character in it I could personally relate to. It straddles a fence between believable characters and totally off-the-wall behavior. John Hughes, in a fad of the time, relies too much on loud pop music blaring over the background to help tell the story, perhaps afraid that his audience might get bored or distracted, despite the film's short run-time and fast pace. The multiple interviews add a nice restrospective; it's a shame that the film's real star, Molly Wingwald, did not participate!

Great 80s movie about high school and the fears and dread of being a teenager. About clicks and a culture of adolescents getting along and realizing their lives.

Perfect teen movie from the 80's. Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall lead the pack.

I can relate to the characters unfabulous metamorphasis into womanhood on her 16th birthday! I can also relate to the zainy, quirky family members, uh, how frustrating they can be! This is a cute movie, kind of innocent like in the old days. It is hard to find the sweet, innocent movies that do have a WOW story line. I think all generations can connect with this movie!
