Doctor Detroit is a much underappreciated comedy released in 1984 (four years after the Blues Brothers). It was pretty much a dud at the box office, but it is a lot of fun to watch. It stars the Dan Aykryod as a timid, dull college professor who gets tangled up with a couple prostitutes and ends up pretending to be a pimp for them. When he tries to pretend to be the pimp he becomes Doctor Detroit and turns into a different personality altogether (similar to his later movie Loose Cannons with Gene Hackman and Dom DeLuise). It also has Howard Hesseman (Johnny Fever) as a rival pimp and Fran Drescher (Fran) as one of his “girls”. The big dance scene at the end definitely has some Blue Brothers moves and – a little bit of movie trivia here – the Doctor’s car has the license plate of “BDR-529” the same one used on the bluesmobile.Read full review
