Charlie Band has built a prolific career out of producing and directing low-budget (actually, mega low-budget) slasher/sci-fi films. Like Roger Corman before him, Band has managed to discover talented people in their professional infancy who have been willing to work for practically nothing in order to get a screen credit. And yet Charlie has always been willing to spend a substantial chunk of his budget on a good Director of Photography because he realizes that, in the end, the DP can make a low-budget film look like anything but. In the case of "Trancers" it's Mac Ahlberg who, though pushing 75, is still a Band regular to this day. With a budget of around 400,000 1987 dollars, "Trancers" is a great example of how well this system can work. It has an excellent sci-fi script with an intriguing premise, great acting, and a very good look for a show so far below the typical Hollywood feature film budget. Thomerson is terrific (and BTW also still working with Carlie Band today) and "Trancers" is also an opportunity to see Helen Hunt in one of her earliest sojurns outside TV where she had begun her career. I'm somewhat prejudiced because I was one of those who worked on this film (for practically nothing in order to get one of my first screen credits) but I was surprised to find that Mr. Band runs a very pleasant, no-screaming set which is the mark of someone who knows what they're doing. Although an art film it ain't, "Trancers" is nonetheless a fun ride and a worthy addition to anyone's library.Read full review
