When the Joker told Lawrence to crank up 'Partyman' on his huge 80's boombox while the Clown Prince of Crime defaced priceless works of art in a Gotham City mueseum, controversy was born. Many Batman fans disliked the Joker's taste in music. This was then taken up to eleven in the climactic parade sequence wherein the Joker holds his own celebration of his gigantic, insane ego, to the tune of 'Trust.' While many fans may disagree, I feel that these Prince songs fit perfectly well in the world of Batman. Like the Joker himself, they clash with the dark, dreary and serious atmosphere of Gotham City and this is likely why he (and the filmmakers) chose them. Of the songs featured on this soundtrack, only three were actually used in the film. The aforementioned 'Partyman' in the museum and 'Trust' at the parade, and also 'Scandalous' which plays over the movie's end credits. The others weren't in the movie but somehow fit the theme of Joker mania Prince seemed to be going for. 'Elecric Chair' is pretty fun and 'The Arms of Orion,' wherein Prince is joined by Sheena Easton, is a very moving love song. And finally we have Prince's infamous 'Batdance,' a song so insane even the Joker might raise an eyebrow at it. All in all, Prince's soundtrack for 'Batman' has been unfairly maligned over the years, but I've always loved it. A class-act release.Read full review
This a rare album, that for some odd reason, has been swept under the rug for the past 20 years. All in all, this is one of the funkiest albums Prince released. If you are in the mood for Funk, and simply want a pice of work that makes you want to dance on the dining room table, then check this out. from the opening "Future", to the insane in the membrane "Electric Chair", this album strikes a chord with the best of them. In the gothic threshold of Batman lies a vibrant Prince simply egging us into his world of funk, and I'm there witing with open arms. When "Lemon Crush" smashes home late in the album, we are all ready for the ultimate beatdown of "Batdance". This dance, groove funk, smashmouth, jive ensemble will reassure you that Prince can deliver, and does he ever on these licks.Read full review
