I bought this movie because my brother recommended it for the dancing, from the title I was expecting a light hearted story, such as "Me and my Gal". No, it is more depressing with some strange scenes. I didn't know it was rated R, I should have looked and then realized it was not what I thought, and didn't care for the end at all. I should add that the tap dancing was excellent though and I enjoyed seeing Steve Martin and Christopher Walken perform.
Pennies from Heaven is about a Chicago sheet music salesman (Arthur) in 1934 who's struggling to make a living and has an affair with a schoolteacher (Eileen). He then goes back to his wife. Then he leaves his wife to be with Eileen. However they're broke and at the end Arthur is about to be executed for a murder he didn't commit. Intercut are several musical numbers that are Arthur and Eileen's fantasies. These all contrast with their drab lives. This makes it a very entertaining (the scene with Christopher Walken is a gem) and weird movie. The only problems with it are that a few musical numbers really seem to come out of nowhere and the ending is so downbeat.
This is one of the sweetest musicals I have seen. How could it not be with Bernadette Peters in the lead. With funny man Steve Martin as the male lead, this movie gets a nice splash of comedy. This is a great little love story.
Very unusual movie. Not a movie for everyone. But enjoyed the excellent dancing.

This is a strange and unique movie about a man who relates to the world through the lyrics of the music he both sells and loves. He is a bit of a dubious character; dishonest and misogynistic, which adds to the strangeness of the film because one would assume a man "with a song in his heart" would be a character of heart-warming charm. Instead there is a poingiant contrast between the songs lip-synched by the characters and the reality of their lives in this rather dark but engaging film.
