Story: A family's ordinary tract home suddenly becomes a gateway for enraged ghosts who kidnap their little girl and take her to their twilight world. Hiring paranormal experts, the family attempts to discover why she was taken and how to get her back. Great performances by all in this deluxe ghost story. Comments: Who doesn't know the MOST famous horror-theatre line '' They're Here!... '' ??? This Movie ROCKS!!! little girl trapped inside a TV/Dimension, ghosts haunting a house and it's occupants, TERRIFIC special-effects that even today it is HARD to be matched! directed by Steven Spielberg, one of THE greatest directors of all times, good for any age UNDER parental supervision ofcourse! I remember when i first saw it when i was a kid, many decades ago and i had nightmares about it for months! Movie is set in the late 1970's, and you can clearly see that in the way they interact with there neighbours, sunday afternoon football, and secretely smoking so there children won't see it. ( Flower Power Parents ). The setting & all that can be matched in those times with everyday American, can easily be identified with. Ofcourse the ghost thing is a bit extravagant, but in beginning when they hire professional investigators to find there kid then you can see that Steven Spielberg did his homework good and all. Very catching movie, a classic for all times, one of the first & best horror-movies ever created, prior to Hellraiser. This one you just HAVE TO HAVE in your collection. !982's "Poltergeist", a collaboration of Tobe Hooper (director) and Stephen Spielberg (producer) is an eerie, goosebump-raising horror flick with the right stuff to make you want to leave your lights on all night-and your TV OFF! The Freeling family's new tract home seems an idyllic suburban refuge and a great place to raise a family...until strange paranormal phenomena begin happening. At first, only harmless pranks are witnessed-kitchen chairs moving around and stacking themselves into pyramids, other household items moving around of their own volition-but it soon gets serious, with furniture being thrown around violently, and terrible storms moving through the neighborhood. The Freelings' youngest child Carol Ann (Heather O'Rourke) can seemingly communicate with the ghosts through the family TV set. The spirits become more malevolent, and finally "kidnap" Carol Ann and take her to their disturbed world. The parents (Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) bring in parapsychologists and finally, a spiritualist to find their little girl. The movie has some predictable elements, such as the tract homes being built over a cemetery (without the former occupants being removed by the greedy land developer). This plot twist was used in several horror films including "Pet Sematary". Why only the Freelings' home is possessed isn't explained-but the ending of the movie will make your hair stand on end. Rated PG. 4****Read full review
Who could forget that line uttered by the precious Heather O'Rourke as Carol Ann..The script, the Actors cast in this film as well as the special effects were brilliant..Plagued by bad luck this film scares the socks off you...the eldest Daughter played by Dominique Dunne only 22 was visciously attacked in her own driveway and strangled to death by her ex Boyfriend (he served only 2 1/2 years then was released changed his name and moved out of state)..little Heather O'Rourke who played the Daughter of Fonzie' Girlfriend on Happy Days later in the series..became ill and died while making the 3rd "Poltergeist" Film she became ill and suffered cardiac arrest while on the operating table Heather was only 12 years old at the time of her death! The actor who played the Native American Shaman died of cancer, as did the Ghost expert ("this house is clean")..several accidents plagued the set, a camera man broke his leg, a electrician got a jolt, Craig T Nelson broke his foot, another cast member broke her arm, then suffered a back injury. The swimming pool scene with JoBeth Williams being attacked by skeletons was filmed with real skeletons..it is believed for this reason "Poltergeist" was cursed...last bit of trivia Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams was only 14 and 11 years older then Actress Dominique Dunne who played their oldest Daughter!!...This is a classic thriller that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat..the trivia alone makes the movie an interesting watch..Viewers wont be disappointed, but remember watch all three movies in order..grab the snacks and soda pop, turn off the lights, cuddle with someone you love and enjoy!Read full review
I put this movie off for a long time and only saw bits of it on TV, until I watched the entire movie from beginning to end for the first time recently. All I can say is wow! It truly is a classic like they say! I thought this movie would be cheesy and for kids only, due to the PG rating, and I am surprised this film isn't rated R due to some iffy content. It had me freaked out the whole way through and I am a huge horror fan, which says a lot. I definitely recommend this movie, buy it cheap here on ebay before you never see it again. Remarkable acting and such a fun joy ride, this movie will have you hiding under your couch!
Some of the SPFX may seem dated, but surprisingly, they still enhance this over-the-top story. Jerry Goldsmith's score cannot be ignored, it stands with "Basic Instinct" and "Star Trek The Motion Picture" as some of his finest work. What "Poltergeist" manages to do so well echoes one of its characters, played by the dimunitive powerhouse Zelda Rubinstein; it tells a story that pulls you in. The last ten minutes goes off the rails. Sure, people expected that from Tobe Hooper and Spielberg, but I would have chosen eerie and unsettling over casket missles anyday. And I've always wanted a public place to acknowledge little Miss O'Rourke. She should still be here with us, but endeared herself to generations to come with this movie alone. May she rest in peace.
