Is there anyone left in the Universe who has not seen this film? If yes, and you should read this review, don't hesitate to acquire this DVD. Tootsie is a resounding success. Considering the fact that this film was lensed in 1983, the plot revolves around a less than average actor (Dustin Hoffman), down on his luck, who decides to 'cross dress' as a woman, in order to obtain a part as a woman in a very popular TV soap drama. He gets the part, though no one on the soap knows he is a man. From one this point on, the film takes off with a hilarious life of its own, and never lets up till the credits role. Dustin Hoffman is brilliant as Dorothy Michaels. The film is directed by the acclaimed director Sidney Pollack (Out of Africa) who also makes a cameo appearance in the film, as Hoffman's theatrical agent. Kudos go to the screen writer, the supporting cast, of Jessica Lang, Teri Garr et al. It is no wonder with such a superb ensemble that this film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Michael Dorsey is an unemployed actor with an impossible reputation. In order to find work and fund his friend's play he dresses as a woman, Dorothy Michaels, and lands the part in a daytime drama. Dorsey loses himself in this woman role and essentially becomes Dorothy Michaels, captivating women all around the city and inspiring them to break free from the control of men and become more like Dorsey's initial identity. This newfound role, however, lands Dorsey in a hot spot between a female friend/lover, a female co-star he falls in love with, that co-star's father who falls in love with him, and a male co-star who yearns for his affection. Dustin Hoffman is pure genius in this movie. "Tootsie" is a small masterpiece of intelligent comedy, full of emotions, love and interesting observations about the relationship between women and men.Read full review
Tootsie is a fun movie about a guy (Dustin Hoffman) who is an actor that can't get an acting job. He is also an acting coach trying to help others get acting jobs. The movie is funny and fast paced. For those who like Dustin Hoffman, you can't go wrong.
