I was pleased to read of the solid medical training and the institutional standing of the co-authors, as well as the positive results from sound clinical trials. It was reassuring to see those results translate into "permission" to eat red meats (unprocessed and additive-free) and fatty dairy products. Past myths of the evils of saturated fats and cholesterol-laden foods were dismissed based on well-documented and carefully planned trials. Although the claim is for an easily followed diet, the more I read, the more complicated it sounded. Even though one needs to limit carbs to 20 gr. per day for the first 2 or more weeks, somehow, it becomes much more detailed than that, particularly when you don't want to experience hunger. I created my own setup which allowed me to still lose 2-3 pounds per week (which I find is a more reasonable amount of weight to lose and keep off over time than the higher weight loss with more limited food choices the book offers), and I followed the protein/fat/green veg and snack suggestions which kept me satiated and happy with the plan. Even though I love veggies and salads, I grew tired of the endless work involved with all the daily food prep, and after about 3 weeks, felt I had seen the results that avoiding "carby" foods can give you, and have chosen to call off the severity of the diet, and go back to balanced meals, with very small amounts of brown rice, whole grain pasta, or sweet potatoes, and, small, reasonable snacks, albeit with slower results. The book is worth the information and peace of mind knowing it's the low-fat and high carb diet that has done so many of us in over the past 20 years. I still recommend the read, and feel empowered by what I learned. Too bad we can't get the ice cream makers to create a fatty, Splenda ice cream as an occasional treat for those of us "in the know!" Buy the book, learn, and put it to use as best you can!Read full review
Easy to read and absorb the info on the diet. I would say that it definitely works for burning fat, however they probably should emphasize an overall upper calorie limit - some people take 'no limit' as permission to eat larger quantities than helpful. The sample weekly meals on Atkins website give a better sense of realistic amounts and portions. Still, really like the way the book explains the theory behind the diet, it is an important tool.

I skimmed much of the book, but really liked that it has meal plans for different levels of carbohydrate intake. Other books had recipes, but I needed help with looking at full days worth of food. There are recipes in the book and chapters on how to proceed on the ketogenic eating plan. I liked that it talks about the health improvements beyond weight loss with the ketogenic nutritional plan.

I purchased the original Atkin's diet book years ago but think it ended up in the Goodwill pile at some point. This updated version has all of the same info plus updated. Enjoying this book and will be using it as a reference for some time.
