This is her first album (1984), and while she isn't given a lot of opportunity to show off her capabilities, it is an excellent introductory album. I really like "Reverend Lee" and "Rock Me on the Water" as well as the slower paced "The Very Thought of You" and New York State of Mind." As for her style, don't think of modern Jazz women like Diana Krall or Patricia Barber, think Aretha Franklin crossed with Ethel Merman, or a female Mel Torme. Okay, maybe that's a bit silly, but if you like the "Big Band" sound, you should like Ms. Schuur, especially her older material from the 80's. If you really want to hear her wail, get "Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra."
Picked this up originally back in 1980. Loved it but lost it. So to get a clearer copy on CD decided to pick up a new copy and geek out on it again.

Great CD from one of the finest jazz singers of our time. The vocals are rich, with great old standards covered with precision. This is an early effort by Schuur, whose carreer has morphed into her less edgier style of today. Like the trilogy of the "Godfather" movies, the first one is always better than the sequel(s).
