This adaptation of Harlan Ellison's popular sci-fi novella is not your typical futuristic saga. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, but the film's tone is anything but serious. In fact, it is a curious black comedy, very funny, but with genuine dark undertones. The film's plot revolves around a young man (Don Johnson) trying to survive in the wastelands of a world where civilization has ceased to exist. He only needs two things in order to be happy: food and sex (not in that order). His companion/sidekick is a dog named Blood, who has the ability to communicate telepathically (Tim McIntire provides the voice). The movie is horrendously anti-feminist, but it also presents an unflattering view of masculinity. It is mainly a sarcastic, nihilistic movie, in which the only decent character is a dog (!). The look of the film is compromised by a shoestring budget, but one could argue that the movie's simple visual texture add an air of authenticity to the story. Unfortunately, the movie goes downhill after the story moves from the wasteland to a bizarre underground city. These sequences contain the heart of the story, but strangely enough, this is the film's section that has dated badly (plus these scenes don't have the deliciously sarcastic commentary that the dog provides during most of the movie). It is not a perfect film, but I think the movie is strange enough to deserve its cult status.Read full review
This is an amusing post-apocalyptic look at a guy and his dog who talks only to him, telepathically, and their relationship. This young man is dominated by the search for nookie, and the dog assists via his doggy senses regarding female scents. Girls prove to be a dime a dozen, especially when they are disloyal and lead him into danger, and man's best friend also proves to be a boy's best friend, better even than his latest nasty girlfriend, who comes to an unexpected, but well justified end. Hilarious ending that... Wonderful.
Quite an offbeat Story about life after WW4 but what else would you expect from a movie based on a novelette by Harlon Ellison. While It definately falls in the B movie category its definately not the worst one you will ever see. As unique a sotry line as i've ever seen and the last 2 minutes of the Movie are a Must See!!!!!! They make the movie! All in all if you love science fiction this one is a must have for your collection!
Terrible quality, but for 2 dollars; whatever the grittiness adds to it somehow.
