I bought this mostly, I have 2, because my 11 year old son, at the time, was an extra in the movie and appeared twice - yippee! You know how mothers can be!! I even shook hands with Jonathan Thomas! Lucky me! The title is deceiving. Great cast. Thomas has had a tough upbringing and has made bad choices, having had no role models. He's in a detention center and still making bad choices until his path crosses with a gentle souled women, grandmotherly type, played by Ellen Burstyn. She sees beneath his exterior and sees a boy who needs a second chance. There's always hope if we take the time to see! Through their ups and downs, of which there are many, they form a bond. It takes a lot of struggling and questioning on both Jonathan's and Ellen's part. The movie is tough, heart-warming, sad at times and comical. Watch for when Ellen's butt gets caught in her rocking chair and she can't get out!! Movie was filmed in Clearwater, Florida. Hope this helps!Read full review
This - my third attempt to purchase the original version of this movie - was finally successful! I do not have a large DVD collection but, after happening upon "Walking Across Egypt" in a video rental place, considered this a must have! I will watch it over and over again. Delightful, funny, uplifting, challenging, and inspiring, it very sensitively portrays the struggles of an elderly widow woman who is being pressured by her daughter to give up her independent life and a young delinquent who has never known the discipline of someone who cared about him. Ellen Burstyn plays a superb role as the lonely widow who, at the beginning of the story, sees no purpose left for her existence beyond planning her own funeral and feeding stray dogs. In the process of befriending a young man at a juvenile detention facility she finds new meaning for her life. From very different backgrounds, the two needy leading characters come to understand, appreciate, and love each other. The acting of Jonathan Taylor Thomas in a few spots is less convincing than his older colleague but not enough to detract from the story. Be careful NOT to buy the "Feature Films for Families" version of this movie as the bleeped content weakens the portrayal of how two people from very different walks of life are corrected and changed by seeing one other's perspective. The "Families" version (I guess in an attempt to render the movie acceptable to the prejudiced) has cut out much of the content supporting the point.Read full review

I originally purchased this video when all my boys were still living at home. They loved it and recommended it to their friends. I later donated it to the local library so others could enjoy it too. I have since purchased it again and again to loan out."Wes"(Johnathan Taylor Thomas) reminded me of so many teens who are struggling these days and reminded me how "Those who deserve love the least need it the most". Everyone who sees it loves it. It should be a part of every family collection. The actor(s) are wonderful and "bring" you into the movie as though you are there as the story unfolds. You'll laugh and cry and want to applaud at the end. It's awesome!
I bought this DVD by mistake confusing it with an Egyptian Series documentary. Was disappointed and what the heck, played DVD. To my amaze the move was really, really good and I truly enjoyed. Very good story and the end was unexpected....I almost got a bit emotional! :-0 Glad I have this movie in my collection! Guess, things happen for a reason after all! Ha ha ha!
