'Pacific Heights' is an average Lifetime movie equivalent with a bit better pacing, a Hollywood budget, and some star power. There, I said it. A lot of people are apparently afraid to call this one what it is: overblown drama. It's unrealistic, implausible, plot points don't add up...however, it is a satisfying trip. For the realm that 'Pacific Heights' operates in where we live in a world so far diluted that logic and authority have no bearing, it certainly holds your attention. Michael Keaton plays a mysterious man named Carter Hayes. Modine and Griffith play a couple who recently purchased an elaborate San Francisco home and decided to rent out the lower rooms to pay their home loan. In a logic beyond my thought capability, Keaton somehow tricks the couple into becoming a tenant (and remain one) without paying rent or leaving a deposit. And despite all this, the ever faulty legal system BACKS Mr. Keaton. Of course, his dark past starts to catch up with him and everything that could possibly go wrong does as Modine is provoked over and over to "react" to Keaton in the most impassive of ways. If someone decided to label 'Pacific Heights' as Science Fiction they wouldn't be far off. The over the top outbursts, the seeming blind eye of the police to any of Keaton's obvious provocation, and the complete oblivious state of the world around them all add up to a world we don't live in. Now, in some existential overly analytical film expert way, someone would likely argue these were creative choices made to show the audience that there was no way to remove Keaton from their lives. It was about coming to terms with life's debacles and not running away. Well, I ain't buying it. 'Pacific Heights' is what guilty pleasures are made of. It's not redeeming in any long term sense, and it certainly isn't guilty of over thinking things. BUT, it has enough interesting plot points and builds a good amount of suspense enough to justify a viewing. Modine gives a strong performance (even if he dives into hysteria a bit too quickly) and Keaton is good; introverted as always but brooding and creepy. The beautiful views of the Bay don't hurt one bit. And given all the eye candy and solid execution, one can look past the ridiculous scenario and average script. It's 110% of mediocrity, and your 100 minutes will be decently invested on a viewing if only to see Matthew Modine go nucking futs.Read full review

This film is one of those that kind of flew under the radar in the early 90's; great stars, not much fanfare. Michael Keaton plays the bad guy in this turn, and most convincingly. Melanie Griffith, maybe her best performance other than Something Wild. Twists and turns, sweaty palm moments, all included. Great weekend nostalgic watch with popcorn..

Scary and entertaining. If you like Michael Keaton's Batman and Beetlejuice, you will love this movie. If you are thinking about becoming a landlord, I highly recommend seeing this movie. Be sure to look for Tippi Hedron (Hitchcock's "The Birds") cameo. Tippi is a movie Icon... as well as Melanie Griffith's mother. Great Movie

We LOVE movies that show us/remind us of what can really happen in this world, and how the law protects the guilty if youre not careful. The movie starts out where a couple completely in love, choose to pursue their American Dream by purchasing a home of their own and bringing it back to life by putting all of their love and devotion into the house. After the remodel, they rent out sections of this beautiful home to people they feel they can trust. That was their first fault, as things are always as they may seem. One of the new tenants takes them, their home, and their love for a ride!! The scenes get pretty vicious and disturbing, but keep in mind that this "can" happen. The movie contains a lot of action througout its entirety, while helping us understand what can really go wrong. In the end, you'll feel what hard work and devotion can do! This is an older movie(1990), but definitely a MUST SEE/MUST OWN. You shouldnt be disappointed. We give it TWO THUMBS UP!!Read full review
