I purchased this phone to use with Straight Talk Wireless replacing a Nokia E5. I have to say as a former iPhone user that Microsoft is giving Apple a run for their money, The phone is responsive and has most of the apps I wanted to use. It is easy to sync it with my Windows PC. The features of this phone were exactly what I look for in a smart phone. Its easy to use and the OS is intuitive. The only drawback with the Windows 7 phone OS is the inability to alter the settings for MMS messages so I cant send pictures or videos via text, but that is a small price to pay for having such a great phone. Also the range for receiving Wi-Fi seems a little short. I use my iPad and Macbook Pro in my living room with no problem, but this phone doesn't hold a Wi-Fi signal there reliably.
I bought this phone because I needed a replacement for my very old Tilt 2. My contract is already up, but I need something till the Galaxy S2 comes to ATT (it was just announced it would come during August). The pros of Samsung Focus: very smooth and simplistic OS (comparable to iPhone's iOS, though I'd still say iOS is a tad simpler); gorgeous Super AMOLED screen; 4" is the sweet spot for screen size for most people (although 4.3" is emerging to be the standard nowadays); Good browser. Ignore everything you've heard about previous versions of mobile IE -- this one works, and it works well; good camera + flash ; quick and easy text/call/email notification system -Very thin and light Cons: -Early stage of OS development. Until it gets the Mango update in -- presumably -- September, it'll be lacking in a few key features that lead to annoyances, like inability to turn off the shutter sound and multitasking. However, Microsoft has made updates easy as pie unlike some other companies. -Weak application store. Because it's still early, the application store is limited. A lot of major apps will be in the market, but you don't have a whole lot of options. Apps are the core and heart of any smartphone, so when you're buying a Windows Phone 7 device, you're making an investment and expecting lots of improvements on the way. -Plastic design. I don't mind it because I understand the necessity for a light body, but some might complain about the design quality. There's also a weak battery life due to the constant pushing of data from emails. Conclusion: Overall, the Focus is an extremely solid and buttery smooth phone. There are kinks to be worked out, but it is mainly the OS' fault, not the hardware. The good news is, these updates will be coming soon and they will fix nearly every gripe people have. The bad news is, the update isn't here yet (at the time of my review). Would I still recommend buying this phone, even with that knowledge? Yes. Even with it's lacking features, the Focus and WP7 still works very well. The coming Mango update is only icing on the already tasty cake. On a side note, I did some research before I bought this phone. The most important quality to me was money to quality ratio. For it's price point, the only comparable phone I saw was the Samsung Captivate, (basically the same phone as the Focus except with Android OS, no LED flash, and a different 1GHZ processor) which is another good buy. Android is more comparable to Windows (customizable, but sometimes laggy/buggy) and Windows Phone 7 is comparable to OS X (kind of weird comparing a windows phone to Apple OS, but it fits the description).Read full review
I bought this as an affordable way to have I-pod touch features wi-fi(e-mail,web search, apps, etc..)+phone without data package and the I-phone price. After adding additional memory - class 4 partriot 16gb (note class 10 card did not work!) and purchasing USB data cable that should have been included in original packaging, (needed for zune and OS updates) it works great. Upgraded to new Mango OS and couldn't be happier. Battery life could be better, but only shows weakness in extended game playing (for which my kids love to use it). I found that turning off wi fi when not needed greatly enhances battery life. All and all,a very customizable and user friendly phone. Would very much recommend. Finding new apps and uses everyday!
I love this phone because its very Slim and slick! Feels very nice to the hand! also the Windows 7 OS is great, but more controlled than iPhone OS, You must have windows Live account in order to have anything on it! iPhones you do not! Another thing that is a con, is that the internal memory in the phone is too small, you can only take about 4 pictures, and than the phone tells you there is no more memory delete 1 of your pictures, you have to buy a MicroSD card, to download or store all your stuff! And back cover is plastic. This phone is great for those who never used Windows 7
We bought this product after looking at reviews on the internet and it was rates in the top. We got a good price on eBay for $250AUD (without the box, opened and hardly used). My first impression was that the back cover and side plastic seemed cheap. I wondered whether it was the real thing. That is the only downside, the cheap feel of the back plastic. However when turning the device on, the elegant and crystal clear display over rode the external casing's drawbacks. The screen is larger than average smartphones and it's very elegant. The touch screen is sensitive and easy to use. It's a beautiful phone. We are happy with the purchase. It's a pleasure to use and the screen and resolution is brilliant. The camera is also great 5 mega pixels and flash. The phone is fairly wide with a big screen yet it's thin and light. Great phone!Read full review
