Good: small and light, multicolor lights can work like a text message caller ID without using ringtones, easy to type on YMMV: software is too old to use the "apps" (ex. news, weather, Facebook, etc.), picture messaging, or Sprint Nav but I haven't done any extensive troubleshooting or taken it to a Sprint store. I couldn't use the self-service activation and had to call Sprint customer service, but they were able to get it on my account. It has a 2.5mm headphone jack, so if you want to be able to listen to music on it, you have to get an adapter. Could be better: screen is a bit small. Apparently other versions of the Katana have bigger screens. Call quality is a step down from a modern phone; a bit "clippy" but turning the volume down may help. By today's standards, the camera is really bad, but it was probably okay in 2008. The speaker phone has the same problem with distortion and it's not much louder than using it with the ear speaker.Read full review
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
pro: Very good looking phone, easy to use, has camera, bluetooth, web access. cons: camera is less than 1 megapixel, limited functions compared with current cellphones. Overall: Nice basic cellphone, good signal, easy to use, decent battery life, basic photos, web access works well with sprint 3G.
I like that the phone is just the right size, and is very light. It has great features, like the illumination effects and the camcorder. The only drawback is I cannot for the life of me find ANY way to put custom ringtones on it. I have a ton of mp3s on my MicroSD card, but it doesnt recognize any of them as a ringtone format. I've also tried .qcp and .aac files, all to no avail. It seems Sprint or Sanyo only lets you use the supplied ringers or ones you buy from the Sprint store, which is ridiculous.
The Sanyo Katana Ecplise has been at once my favorite and most hated phone. The style, setup and features are wonderful and easy to use. I have now had two Eclipses and while I love many aspects of the phone, I am ultimately forced to give it a poor rating due to problems with the screen. I initially considered the first phone to be a single defect and purchased another one not realizing this was not an isolated incident. On both phones I have had, the screen goes out. It first begins with a small flicker on the main screen, then freezing on both screens and finally the screens turn to a blank white display and never recover. I noticed another review on here where someone mentioned the same problem and I talked with yet another person in a Sprint store who had the same issue. Sanyo needs to take ownership of this problem and issue a recall. I have talked to Sanyo and Sprint and neither will be accountable for this obvious defect. I've been a Sanyo customer for the better part of a decade and loved all of my previous phones, but this issue has driven me away from them and I will not purchase any more products from Sanyo. I understand that problems arrive in products. My issue is with Sanyo refusing to recall the phones when it is clear that several customers are experiencing major inconveniences with their products.Read full review
I like this particular model for its' simplicity. If you have a DATA plan with sprint, this model DOES support Sprint Telenav GPS software which can be downloaded from sprint's online store free of charge. Also this device can handle Sprint Mobile E-mail and Opera 4.1 Turbo. Basically I can surf the internet just as if I had a computer with Opera installed. It is amazing that this lower class device can do a lot of the same functions as the expensive ones. All in all... A good phone!
