Dark matter, high times, soul searching, crime, redemption, rich, dirt poor, Tartt covers it all with finesse worthy of the pulitzer prize she was awarded. Far above the pulp grinders that make the New York Times 'best seller' list year after year...this is a one off, digging deeply into the goodness as well as the vagarity of the human psyche, and it's apparent she has actually experienced or been well advised in regards to the highs and lows of this roller coaster ride that many of us have not and will not ever experience.

Goldfinch starts out in language that feels luxurious, taking its time to tell its story in masterful descriptive language, but grows more and more self-indulgent. That is fine, so long as the reader also benefits, but by page 600 or so, I found that the book got so tedious that I wanted to throw it against the wall, which is a shame because I really wanted to find out what happens to the characters, but cold not stand one more paragraph of the run-on sludge. (I know. I know.) It's frustrating because Tartt is obviously so darned gifted and skilled. She needs an editor with more of an iron hand.

From the first sentence to the last, this book grabbed me and would not let go! Haven't read a book that affected me this much in years and I read A LOT! I never wanted it to end! I have lent this book to every reader I know and their reaction is the same as mine. No surprise it won the Pulitzer. If you read no other book this year, make it "The Goldfinch." You will NOT regret it. Ms. Tartt is a talent to be reckoned with!

What a great book to dive into and become immersed in the tale of a young teen who loses his mother and must navigate all the challenges that get thrown at him. So happy to "discover" this author, Donna Tartt, who knows her way around writing a great American novel.

Compelling story that immediately draws you in and keeps you interested. The author's descriptions transport you to wherever Theo happens to be. In depth character development fosters a feeling of familiarity. A good, long, cozy read that also makes you think.
