Even though the Nikon D500 is not listed as one of the supported cameras, I decided to take a chance, as it has the same socket as the D810. I'm pleased to say it works great, so much easier than a wired remote dangling around the tripod. I put a long shoe lace on the button unit, and I do hang this around my neck, with the button in my shirt or jacket pocket between shots. Would fully recommend to any Nikon shooters with a supported camera.

There are red and blue LEDs on the receiver that are on when the shutter is open. Why, oh why, did they have to ruin an otherwise elegant device with such a glaring fault? One of the purposes of this device is to use it for long exposures at night, when the lens will almost certainly pick up the ugly glow from the LEDs. At least when Canon does something like this the LED shuts off when the shutter is open so you only screw up only your friend's photos standing next to you, but not your own. With the RFN-4s you mess up both. The fix is easy, just tape the LEDs with electrician's tape, but I would rather not have them there because the tape is sure to fall off at the most inopportune time.

Best Remote for Nikon cameras. Compact, usable with wide flanged lenses such as 24mm PCE. Very reliable, draws power from the camera, can be turned off via the main button. Led confirmation of focus from blue to red, as with on/off. Having used many other remotes the main advantage of the SMDV is it allows access to the hot shoe for a TTL trigger or flash and the camera can be operated remotely without bulky accessories. To prevent damage or the 10 pin socket, I anchored it to the rubber sealing book with a zip tie.

It's small, works great from any reasonable distance, the receiver doesn't require additional batteries. Downside: there are two LEDs on the front side of the receiver and one of them (bright blue one) works during exposure. It sometimes affects resulting image, especially in low light conditions. I have "fixed" it with a narrow piece of black sticky tape.

I added this to my other unit, so I can fire multiple cameras at the same time (with a single remote). Product works great, and highly recommend for many uses. Reduce camera shake Selfies Triggering camera remotely from a distance Portrait sessions (so you can stay engaged with client) Triggering multiple cameras at same time (requires additional unit)
