Ball has been around a looong time and they have come up with a really neat idea- plastic lids for the ubiquitous Ball Mason jar. We have accumulated a few pint and quart Mason jars- even some pasta sauces come in these nice reusable containers. The problem is that a lot of them have the ring and top type lids. These tend to rust after extended use, or get separated in the kitchen drawers making reusing the jars a hassle. These lids are great! They can not be used for hot canning, but for storing leftovers these lids make the jars an ideal container. I use the lids for storing things like yeast for baking, Wheat germ and nutmeats, or anything that you want. I have even frozen thing like soup in the jars with these lids. They can be temporarily marked with a china marker. They are dishwasher safe (top rack) and store easily. If you are concerned about chemicals in plastics like Bisphenol A or Phthalates glass jars with these BPA-free lids obviates these dangers. On top of that for the environmentally concerned, you'll be recycling something that would otherwise end up in a landfill (our town no longer recycles glass!). Good idea.Read full review

the build on these is rather flimsy and I expected that they would not leak, since they are threaded to match the Mason jars. Wanted to use these to store pickled jalapenos in the refrigerator without having to deal with the two piece metal lids. You have to really tighten them down to keep liquid from dripping out... with the lid that tight, it's a bear to open the jar. Great for dry storage that doesn't require an air tight seal.

The plastic lids are handy if you use the jars for food or beverage storage or on blender. The metal canning lids are two pieces, rust, and harder to grip when lid on tight. The plastic lids seal well, look nice, and now my empty canning jars that used to sit in storage are being put to use.

I do a lot of canning and some things, ie salsa, applesauce, jellies etc. don't get used up at one meal. These lids are so much easier than putting the lid and band back on. They are fairly inexpensive and I have bought them for my daughter and sister.

These are not for canning, only for use after you open your canned products. I use them after I open my red raspberry jelly jars and do not want to use the metal lids. I love them.
