Very enjoyable and informative! The author assumes that the reader is not very sophisticated re the world of bovines and sets out to teach quick ways to determine what critter you've encountered (i.e., beef cattle have a rectangular shape and dairy cattle a wedge shape -- how easy!). This is done via clearly written text with a touch of humor, excellent life-like detailed drawings and delightful cartoons. Instead of chapters on beef cattle, dairy cattle and "work" cattle (plowing, pulling carts, etc), the author breaks down cattle by color -- black, black and white, red, etc -- and discusses the breeds found therein and their uses. Bovine novices will find this book very useful and even those who can already tell beef from dairy at a glance will find a lot of new information here. I was raised in NYC so did not grow up around cows but, after reading this book, I can fairly confidently identify different breeds. Highly recommended.Read full review
