I really enjoy the music from The Band and this is an awesome set of four cds that covers their last public performance ever. This is great classic rock music with talented guitar playing and unique lyrics. Furthermore, because this is a concert of their last performance, other great artists are included as well, namely Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, etc. I had to get the cds after watching the documentary of the Last Walz and falling in love with the music.
I've been a huge fan of the Band since the 2nd album. When Rhino released a 4 disc set, I couldn't wait to buy it, but I wanted to wait for the price to go down. I finally took the plunge and I'm glad i did. The rich harmonies, the tight ass playing, knowing each others moves. Then, going back to being The Band that backs such luminaries as Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrison etc, yet all those stars turning around and paying tribute back to those wonderful Canadians. Makes me wish I was there. It's sad that they broke up with animosity, but just inside heaven's gates, you'll see a group of men just picking and playing music by that log cabin by the fishing lake, that just feels good. Ladies and gentlemen, the Band!
The Band, for the longest time, was an unknown asset at every recorded or live performance by Bob Dylan. It wasn't until Bob was recovering from his accident, that he and "the guys", started messing around in the basement studio they shard in upstate New York, house, which led to 1st 'The Basement Tapes', and then the breakout album 'Music from Big Pink", the actual color of their home. The Band has to be the greatest combination of musical talents, and varied voices EVER. They set the bar for EVERYONE who followed in those times. The Last Waltz, at The Winterland Ballroom, ended their joint efforts, at the place THEY 1st started, along with a multitude of friends in fun, food, wine, friendship, love, laughter, and MUSIC. Absolutely, a must buy for every person of the late 60's thru the late 80's....and on. Oh yeah, and what a photographer/director they got to record this great event, it started his fabulous Career. This is the ultimate anthology to a group who was one of the Top 5, and no one really knew about them until Hopper and Fonda did "EASY RIDER.." Hard to find, but well worth the chase...Lord, Bless 'em.Read full review
If you've seen the band live, on the Festival Express dvd for example, you may be worried that you'll be getting four hours of nearly unlistenable vocals. There isn't a weak performance in this set. Clapton trading solos with Robbie Robertson, "Helpless" with Neil Young and Joni Mitchel, Dylan's numbers, and Muddy Waters on "Mannish Boy" really make this gem sparkle. The guys take this show seriously and do all their guests justice, but the dvd shows the fun and excitement onstage as well. Buy the dvd, but get the cds for travel. You won't be dissappointed.
Get This Version, It Simply Can't Get Enough, Thanks!
