Overall, very neat portable GPS. Definitely stands up to some abuse. It is holding up nicely being attached to my mountain bike mostly when we go riding, has been rained on already, and dropped and it's tough as nails. My favorite feature on this device would have to be marking my starting point, simply with a few clicks, I can map where the car is, and I can head on out into the world, I then set a .5 mile radius to my starting point, so that way whether I'm doubling back, or re routed and went a different way, the device will alert me when I'm within .5 mile of my vehicle. Neat feature, and was specifically helpful when We rode our bikes up as far as we could, and when the top was too rocky, and we were too tired to hike a bike, we just locked out bikes up to a few trees, buried them in leaves, and expected no one to find them again, not even ourselves, as every tree looks like the next. With this feature, I changed the .5 mile radius to go off at 100 ft radius. As we got closer to "maybe we left them on this tree?" the device alerted me and low and behold, our bikes were safe and sound where we left them. I also love being able to back track the route I took, even if it's not an actual path in the woods. If I got lost, or went off course, and wanted to go back the way I came, I can simply hit "backtrack" and I'm well on my way, foot for foot step for step back to where I came from.Read full review
This Magellan is finally on par with any of the best receivers offered by Garmin, and in some cases it's better. It finds its position quickly, and the touch screen menus are very easy to navigate and modify to your personal requirements. It offers paperless geocaching and geotagged photos. The screen is bright and easy to read in sunlight. The most surprising feature is the onboard map. It is not a basemap that shows only major roads and features. This map displays every minor road and water feature in 2 or 3 dimensions! The shaded elevations are helpful as well. I had no problems updating the software, and it has been very reliable for me. The only other feature I would like to see on the 510 is an electronic compass. As it is now, you must be moving to see the accurate directions. Overall, I am very happy with the features, durability, and reliability of this receiver, and I would recommend it to hikers and geocachers alike.Read full review
Good point: 1. GPS performance is better than Triton. 2. Duration of the active suspend mode 30 hours! (eneloop use) (My Rating. GPS performance of the Normal mode and Active suspend mode is the same. Good.) Bad point: 1. Arrow in the map screen is too big! ("Map, WP, Track" is invisible) 2. Duration of the normal mode 10 hours. (eneloop use) 3. WP in the map screen is too small. 4. Route does not automatically calculate the distance remaining. why? Comprehensive evaluation: GPS performance is good. Active suspend mode is good. However, "big arrow in the map screen" to reduce the performance. This small defect becomes the big performance degradation. The Magellan, consideration is not enough.
I have truly enjoyed my Magellan eXplorist 510. I use it for geocaching but it also has a really good camera and carried when hiking in back country, it can be an invaluable tool!

I use this for geocacaching. Sometimes it gets you dead on and most times within 20 feet or so.Took just a few min to learn how to use. I like the touch screen, easyer to use than the joy stick ones.
