in the quick, GREAT lens, small sharp excellent handling, a great value. Learn more, read on ;) I love my macro work, I have a 36" on my 4x5 so i can get serious magnification, so when I purchased a NEX camera body, I went a big nuts and purchased many different lenses to find the best! The NEX has a light anti ailisang filter on the High Resolution sensor, and with adapter will take lenses from most mounts. The one problem (advantage really) is I don't record same image area as a 35mm frame the smaller sensor just using the sharper center area (sweet spot) of sharpness. I compared the Nikon 55, 60 macro, Minolta 55, 80 macro and this Olmpus 50, and I tried a Minolta 55/1.4 on the bellows to compare. This is what i found. This is the smallest and lightest of the bunch. The Nikon 60 and Minolta 80 are the only two that go directly to 1:1 and are the two largest the Minolta on the bellows is clearly the largest/heaviest. The remainder of the lenses all go to 1:2, and closer with extension tubes/bellows. the Nikon 60 is auto-focus, which is a feature i don't use shooting macro, So i find the focus feel very light, but it is accurate. The Nikon 55 i think is a bit more used and is a bit worn, so it feels a bit lighter than the feel of the just as old Minolta and Olympus who have a slightly heavier feel. The Olympus being the most compact, and extending from both sides of the focus ring. But this is all academic, what about the Sharpness john.... in a strange twist of fate, they are all Really Really Really close in the sharpness! All but impossible to tell the difference one from another. What I did notice is that the Olympus is a bit warmer color balance, and I think the Nikon has a bit nicer Bokeh, but just barely. With all these macro lenses which do i like the best? The Olympus! small, light, great feel, sharp as a tack, great little case fits snug in my bag. Which do I use most often? In the studio I use the Minolta 80 on the bellows, more working distance for lights. What piece is on my wish list? Olympus 80 and a bellows or cool auto tube.Read full review
I purchased this lens for about $55, figuring at that price I could not lose. My experience with this lens is broadly similar as with other manual lenses on my OMD EM 1. Wide open, they're not great. Very soft (although this one, at 3.5 maximum aperture, isn't bad). But stopped down some, the IQ is quite good. And the price is always right. Plus, this lens is gorgeous.

When used on my Sony A7's I can't help but to realise how sharp this little lens really is, I love old lenses and especially Olympus Zuiko which were known for resolution, so glad that I found this little germ.

This is a wonderful little lens that can be had for a bargain price these days. Picture quality is absolutely stuning even at wide open aperture. Amazingly sharp. The only reason to stop down is to increase the depth of field, not the sharpness. Colors and contrast are also excellent. And the depth of field preview button on the lens is very handy when you want to stop down after you focus at wide open aperture because you can set the aperture before you focus and simple press on the button gives you the desired aperture.
I have been after this particular macro lens for some time, awaiting a favorable price. Got my chance and jumped on it, and I don't regret it one moment. The lens is well known for it's high quality, not only as a macro lens, but also as an excellent walk-around fixed lens. I'm using it on a DSLR and simply loving it.
