I was initially disappointed when I saw the size of this little baby, but when I taped my daughter's concert, the clarity and definition made up for its size. There was one shot that was poorly lit that looked better on the tape than it did in person. The sound quality was awesome, as well. I couldn't believe how clear the sound was, and that was just using the built-in mics. The sound was even better when using XLR, but just watch your settings on the attenuator. Downloading is as simple as plug and play. Imports to FCP, although the render time takes longer on older versions. The only drawback that I found was the use of the wide-angle converter lens. It's great for the wide shots, but the focus doesn't hold if you need to zoom in tight. Oh, and if you purchase High Capacity Batteries online, make sure that they are Decoded, or else the camera won't read the duration levels.Read full review
this is the first camcorder of the new era which blurrs the line between professinal and home use with the included 2 xlr mic jacks indepentant volume control and varied features including shooting in no light scenarios it is perfect for the begining filmmaker to run and gun pro documentary use . the only drawback is non excangable lens but the one it has is as versitile as you can get from shooting macro to widescreen it can do it all. with 10x zoom and and 64gb internal memory + 2x 64gb sdxc card possibility it gives the filmmaker long uninterupted shooting .
I love the camcorder. The image quality is stunning even in low light. It is extremely reliable and has excellent battery lift. It is compact and easy to hold. The controls are very comfortable to reach. The only complaint I have about is is that the touch screen is a bit tricky with large hands. I purchased this camcorder mainly to take videos of my horses, and it works great in the barn where the light is frequently poor, The AVCHD files import very easily into Final Cut Pro X. I have had no problems importing them. I have used the camcorder with a wireless XLR mic and gotten good results as well as with the built in mic. The handle mounted controls are particularly helpful when taking low angle shots.
I think it would go without saying that this is the very best camcorder i have owned, its a full 1080-1920p high definition camcorder, and will output in the high quality mp4 format. It packs a big punch for a breathed on hf g10 vixia, the xa10 of course featuring more pro features, notably the twin xlr ports on the detachable handle,i hook up a rode ntg2 and results are good.I use this for the whole of the recorded soundtrack, and only vision overlays in synch with the 'b' roll camera. What i did find with the xa10 is the pre-determined factory set recording levels needed to be cranked up to 8 or even 9 out of ten to get correct attenuation, but once on the timeline a good enough level reading was evident, kept at this level also proved fine for close dialogue narration, without any bleed over distortion.Something that owners of,tape, dat, cdr, and reel to reel decks know all too well about they also sometimes can get it,it,s as much down to a varying input level of levels most of the time. Also there is a larger 64gb of internal memory on the avchd format for the canon xa10 as opposed to the hf g10.For best results use the 64gb internal memory to gain 24mbps,as the information encoded to the sdhc cards is more like 13mbps approx, but that's a niggle on this canon, and the difference is noticeable.Canon turned this around with the xa20 encoding a whopping 35mbps onto its sdhc cards,a vast improvment. The main functions, indeed the vast majority are driven via the touch screen menu system, and there is a stylus included in the package, this is better than using your fingers, because the contact is more precise and you do not get greasy finger marks on the pretty screen, many reviewers do not like this menu and prefer the next model up the canon liegra xf100 which has virtualy all it's controls on the exterior in the form of knobs and buttons. They are both broadcast professional camcorders, the xa10 has a maximum of 24mbps,and a colour sampling pattern or chroma sub sampling of 4:2:0,which is about the same as a lot of hdv camcorders, the xf100 however meets the modern broadcast minimum standard with some corporations, that is because it boasts a 50mbps maximum, and has a colour sampling pattern of 4:2:2.But back to the xa10,i really do like it,the performance statistics for this are very high for a camcorder in this rank,24p,60i and other popular frame rates make this baby very unique.I find using this in the manual mode better as it gives me more control, not just on the sound, but especially exposure set @0.It will output within a mxf wrapper except for one of the 24fps modes which is native.I always prefer to shoot in 60i,with reductions made later in sony vegas pro 12,where i also change to progressive, with smart re-sample activated, which is the default setting in vegas. It features a 1/3"cmos imaging sensor, the same one in other high end canon camcoders. In my honest opinion you cannot do much better than this if this is your area, and the american specification i slightly favour here as it is a bit more favourable than the european one. This little baby will satisfy all my videoing needs for the next five years or longer, certainly for uploading onto you tube in mp4 avi 1080-1920 format,(you could as i do alter this to 2k 21:9 ratio by using 2048/858p render resolution at 25p pal, with properties on the timeline set to double pal 50fps,but i would not recommend higher.Burning mp2 main concept 1080-1920 format for blu-ray discs is also excellent .happy shooting,Read full review
