I paid $2 for this genesis/mega drive controller, and that is a sweet deal. At that price you could buy it just to get the cable for a project. While it is not a great controller, it is surprisingly good for the money. It's also very easy to open and swap wires around and such. I bought one specifically to make it into an Amiga controller - you swap pins 5 and 7 which are actually right next to each other at one end of the group on the PCB, and cross them with a 470 ohm resistor. You get two buttons in most games, three buttons in some games, and six buttons in a couple of games (like doom.) The d-pad is surprisingly good, but the buttons have too much travel.

After shipping, I paid $2.40 each for these. Did I expect great quality? No. Did I get great quality? No. The are much smaller than official Sega controllers, and feel light and cheap. But, they do work, and I plan to use these with Retro-Clone systems anyway, so for the price, an OK buy. That said, the cord is way too short, 28" which is about the length beween the bottom of my foot to right above my knee - I'm 5'10". If you are an adult, your console will have to be an arm's length away from you.

Do not be fooled by the pictures in this listing. These are much smaller than OEM controllers. The plastic is EXTREMELY cheap and soft. It feels more like a happy meal toy than a standard controller. The pictures in the listing show a MODE button but there isn't even a place on the plastic where the MODE button would go. The cords are VERY thinly insulated and weak. The buttons and D-pad are mushy and each button row seems to move in unison when you press any single button. I used these for a retro game party and they were both rendered non-functional in less than an hour of normal use. Absolute junk.

JUST GET THE OFFICIAL GENESIS 6-BUTTON CONTROLLERS!!. Even though these are $6.00 for the pair, I would gladly pay 4X that for 1 official controller if I would of known that these were so poorly manufactured. If you are even considering buying these STOP RIGHT NOW, and put your $6.00 towards a real Genesis controller. I bought these for Street Fighter 2 and the D-pad is very loose and so are the buttons. The cord is also very short so you have to sit right next to the system. I cannot recomend these at all

I've purchased these in the past and am well aware of the poor quality. However I just purchased two more. I recommend only buying these if you plan to tear them down for parts, which is what I'm doing. The good: At $3 a controller you get most of the parts you need for a project controller. I'm planning to re use the cabling and circuit board for an Arduino project. Ive used the cabling and buttons in the past to modify other controllers that work on a home made Atari classic using a raspbery pi. The bad: The controllers are very poor quality in general. The first thing you'll notice is that it is much smaller than a normal Genesis controller. It feels very light, cheap, and the plastic is flimsy. The next thing you'll notice is that the buttons are different sizes and shapes, like they were all milled out wrong or formed incorrectly. On the controller I bought, the c button jutted out twice as far as the others and the a button was so small that it wobbled in place. The d pad was very un responsive and made games barely playable. The controller also has a laughably short cable so you will need to sit right next to the console while playing. The verdict: Good enough for the cables, barely Worth the plastic is made with. Don't buy this thinking you'll get a useable Genesis controller. Spend the extra money on a real Genesis controller if you want something you can play your games with.Read full review
