I used this as a recorder primarily. I purchased it in about 2004 when I needed a backup digital recorder for my work and I had grown frustrated with the use-ability of "professional" digital recorders back then. We've come a long way, but back then it seemed like we never would. I sent back a $450 professional recorder that got bad sound and purchased this and it worked like a champ, and continued to for several years. I don't use it as such presently, but I'm sure it will still function when I want it to. I used to record (I'm a court reporter) sometimes 7-hour long courtroom hearings, and need to pause to change the battery once at most. I occasionally noted recording approx. 7 hours uninterruptedly on one nimh battery. And while my client wanted me to use expensive, professional-looking stuff (had to be a black box with the magic word "Marantz" on it) I actually used this, my backup recorder to do the real work. Most people will purchase this just for listening to music, of course. Be aware that this model requires the iriver software to access the storage on it. If you don't have a disk I'm sure you can download it. Aside from that I've got no criticism. It will do a great job of recording from any external line-level source in case you ever need it to, though. I always recorded to 128 mbps, 16-bit stereo, and at that setting you could record for over 7 hours on this device. Works like a champ!Read full review
What you can do with this little thing: Listen to the radio Record from the radio Lock the device to that accidental button presses won't change anything (there is a sliding button at the bottom that you slide to lock and unlock the device) It comes preloaded with some songs but you can delete them Delete songs without having to plug it into a computer In theory with the music manager you can put songs from your computer onto the device, but I cannot find the music manager. If you find it, let me know Set alarms Voice record Change aspects of the display And probably more cool stuff that i cannot remember right now! Bad things? None i can think of!

These I-rivers sound great when you plug in an external mic (I use Giant Squid Audio Lab mics and I love them.) They are very handy for podcasts, recording meetings, and even wedding ceremonies. I assume most interested in getting these at this point have these uses in mind. As a MP3 player it is a bit dated and a little tricky to navigate. But perhaps I got a little spoiled on the color video screens you have on the newer MP3 players. But very few of the newer Mp3 players have the record-in function so I keep coming back and buying these I-rivers. They are a great buy, a lot of bang for your buck!
i've had this thing for 5 years and it still works great even though i only use around 1/4 of all the features. it once got ran over by an SUV while I was biking in brooklyn. it still worked when i picked it up it got slightly chipped. great sound , only so many songs you can hold though, unbelievebly durable
We use the 895 for recording wedding vows, Then its audio is synced and added to our wedding video footage,All in all it makes for very good close miked audio. The 895 also is very compact, and easy to set up and use. The only problem is, this is a discontinued product and you will have to search eBay for it.
