PROS-Packed with features so much so that you may never use them all, excellent image quality, awesome 28mm equivalent lens for group shots and up close, able to use accessory flash on hot shoe, ease of operation. CONS- Only one...... when set to HIGH MP (5.1), it takes too long to be ready for the next shot especially if you're using the flash so if you are shooting sports or want to take a succession of pics, you have to set the camera to 2 or 1 MP which is far lower quality than 5.1 MP. If all you shoot are still lifes, there are NO cons.
Older camera in like new excellent working condition. This model Nikon has been around for 20 years or so and it still performs well right along with modern day camera's. It was ahead of it's time. A classic.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
The Nikon Coolpix 5400 was one of the first digital point-n-shoots to deliver image quality similar to film. The 5 MP RAW files will produce a very good 8' x 10" print. The handling is a little slow (writing to cf card) at this resolution. Shooting at 2MB results in a very fast handling camera. Pair this camera with the 1.5x teleconverter and you can shoot anyting you could have handled with a Leica ranfefinder. Macro capability is excellent. Focus is accurate and reasonably fast. In low light just pre-focus. Only limitation is that you must shoot at ASA 200 or below to avoid noise.
This is a great camera. I bought it used because I was going turn it into an Infrared Camera. There are some great instructions here: http://www.lifepixel.com/ir-tutorials/nikon-coolpix-5400-digital-infrared-conversion-instructions.htm The step by step instructions were very good. I had the camera viewing IR in less than a day. I used a red 25 filter at first. Then I went and bought a Lee #87 filter from B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/102762-REG/LEE_Filters_87P3_3x3_Infra_Red_87.html One of the really nice things about this camera, especially after converting to IR, is the customizable "function" button. I set this button to activate the custom white balance feature. It really helps get great pictures.
I decided to purchase this camera to upgrade from my Kodak. I do not like all the options and not having a manual come with the camera to supply needed information, which you need to figure out how to operate the camera.. I did not like getting the camera with no CF card when I got the camera due to the fact it does not operate with out the card and the seller left out this information, the seller did finally send a CF card 15 days after I bought the camera and 10 days after I got the camera and after I went out and purchased a CF Card to see if the camera worked. Overall I would have rather gotten the same camera with a owners manual and flash card and spent more money for it . I should have asked more questions about the camera and the seller should have known from owning the camera that it is not just a point and shoot and he should of supplied better information as to operation and the CF Card and Owners Manual needed to work the camera correctly. The camera does work OK but with some reservations.Read full review
