The Jornada 540 series is old school but I have always loved its sound quality when using it as a music player. To play music on a Compact Flash card you have to create a My Documents folder on the CF and put the music files in that folder, otherwise the Jornada media player can't "see" them. This particular Jornada was "parts only" but just needed a new battery, also sourced through eBay; the upgraded 1800 mAh battery came with the tools required to change it for the OEM battery and it is easy to do. I received my first 540 as a gift when they were new and it is still going strong. A sister gave me hers recently and it also works except the speaker has failed in the past few weeks however the earphone jack still works with the soind quality I mentioned before. All that said it is a bit heavy by today's standards for a handheld PDA/MP3/WMA player. Read full review

I like the Jornada 540 because, given a third-party C compiler I am able to write custom applications for it, and I enjoy programming. The same cannot be said for more modern smart-phones and PDAs. It updates with MS Outlook thanks to ActiveSync, and it does all that I need to do - I like being able to update my Jornada by updating my Outlook on my PC. Its drawbacks are its short lifespan given the best of care, its short life-span (2 to 3 years before I have to buy a rebuild) and its relatively-dim screen, compared to more recent technology. The unit I recently bought was priced very well and worked will upon reception. One other I bought at Ebay had a defective on button so that it spontanously turned its display on and off at random - it got to be annoying, but not out of range of the price I paid for a secondhand device.Read full review
I have 3 hp jornada540 pdas. They were all cost under $50 for the pda. Some I have even bought for aroud $27.00 on ebay. This of couse dosen't include the storage card. I got them for my job and they all seam to work great. I would have 3 working pda incase one brakes then I will have time repair it. The HP Jordada 540 pda comes with Microsoft word, excel, microsoft reader, mcirosoft money, simple caculator and solitaire. They also conect with a garman gps unit, a cammara and a wifi card. Draw backs: There is an emulaotr for this pda but it dosen't work really fast. Also the pda frezzes up sometimes wehn trying to play really long mp3 files. So if youg going to just listen to mp3 files buy a seprate device. If you going to use it longer then 3 hours make sure you are charing the battery. The Hp Jornada I bought a week ago for around 30 dollars was a very good product even if it is a few years old. It has many software resources out on the net and after a bit of a learning curve it can become a valuable addition to anyone's pocket. It's features include speakers,a microphone,touchscreen,16meg of ram,16 of rom, and a compact flash slot. With the compact flash slot this pda can be equiped with a wifi card or a hefty amount of storage. I personnaly am using this pda as a ebook reader and a mp3 player. The one thing I had trouble with is the flash player, but after a quick search I found that this specific device is only capable of flash player 4. Overall, this is a fantastic product that would be tremendously useful to anyone.
It's in really excellent condition. I already have one I bought new, but have not been able to find the accessories. Now I can use both
