The n810 is a wonderful little device, especially for the people who favor linux. A full xterm is installable as well as the openssh ssh client. For the linux administrators of the world its a handy tool to remotely work on your servers through a cell connection when you wouldn't otherwise have a way to connect. I personally go camping quite frequently and take this as a just in case measure. With music and movies it's really convenient to have around. The built in GPS is very poor. In fact I've only been able to get a satelite lock once since I've owned it and it has now been over a month. This is supposedly a known bug in the software (they did use a quality texas instruments chip for the GPS) and they will be fixing it in the next firmware release (4.1 codenamed Diablo) as well as adding in AGPS support via cell phone. The keyboard is small though more than usable for anybody with somewhat nimble fingers, it is irritatingly missing an "alt" key which makes running some console apps through ssh a pain, and I haven't figured out if I can remap another key to do work as an alt key. I hope my thoughts have helped anybody considering this device. It's definately a lot of fun and very useful. Enjoy!Read full review
GPS - takes about 5 min to figure out the satellites and get going. But does work well if you are outdoors. Wifi is impressive for such a small unit, very good range imo. Software is OK. Screen is bright enough to use outdoors while bicycling. Nokia batteries are easy to find. Solid construction. Look up the operating system maemo.org to see if the software you need is available. I like to use it as an internet radio while doing housework. Speakers are loud for a small thing like the N810. Decent youtube playback.
What i like: the connectivity, it is always on when there is a network, easy to connect with others using Google talk, email and internet call. it is ok to view some video from youtube or just looking around on the internet. what i dislike: the battery span is not long enough, it is lack of a radio module, the GPS software is not free of charge and it is a little bit heavier when holding it only in one hand above all, it is a powerful device and excels other PDA without a phone function, very convenient for a trip or business travelling.
Weight of N810 exceeds that of its predecessors, though insignificantly. 226 grams is much in comparison with the mobile phones, however it is little in comparison with any UMPC available nowadays. The weight could be a little bit smaller, but for the metallic front panel of the handheld and the battery cover. Coming back to the device dimensions, first of all they are caused by the screen size - a 4,1” diagonal that sports a resolution of 800х480. It is the best screen among all PDA-phones, the image quality being maximal, the view angles excellent. The arrangement of control elements on the front panel of N810 essentially differs from that of N800. The navigation button with the OK label on it is unavailable when the Nokia novelty is closed. Only two keys are left on the face panel: the lower key is used to return to the previous page of the internet-browser, to switch to the previous view in applications and keeping this key held shuts the running application. The key "home" calls upon the menu of the launched applications (there is an opportunity to shut an application), holding the key allows to return to the desktop, keeping it held once again switches to the latest launched application. The objective of the camera for video calls is found near these controls. The luminance sensor is a novelty for Nokia tablets as well. Employing it not only increases the time of independent work, but also allows working comfortably both in the darkness and in a well-lit environment - the screen brightness is adjusted automatically. As well as with N800 the battery capacity makes 1500 mAh, but the battery model itself is more up-to-date, the battery charge level is metered more precisely. The battery lifetime is an unquestionable advantage of the new gadget. As for this parameter, it’s the most "durable" device in the market. The N810 desktop is divided into three working areas. On the left there is the Task Navigator the bottom part of which displays launched applications and the upper part hosts the icons granting quick access to the Browser, Contacts and Applications. Contacts and Browser are replaceable and Applications can be customized. The status bar is found at the top of the screen, displaying service indicators like the battery life meter, the screen backlighting and the sound volume levels, etc. The user can customize the order in which these fields follow or remove some of them from the screen completely. The indicators showing the battery charge, the connection and the GoogleTalk service status cannot be removed from the status bar.The main part of the screen hosts the area for desktop built-in applets. The applets can be toggled and dragged freely at any time. Some of them can be resized. The new version became more easy-to-use - they aren’t locked into position, can be moved at any moment and can overlap (the transparency effect is employed). The desktop applets grant quick access to the applications, RSS-news headlines, clock, weather forecast, Internet radio, etc. N810 enjoys the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. The Flash 9 plug-in provides for a full-blown navigation practically through any Websites. The AJAX full support is quite to the point. YouTube, Google Docs and Google Reader - all of them can no problem run on N810. + Excellent screen + Long battery life time + Compact dimensio - Necessity of video conversion - Screen gets glared in the sunlightRead full review
Love: Screen is BEAUTIFUL! Construction is solid. Runs LINUX!!! Fast WiFi and automatic connections. Calendar app is awesome, and easy ToDo apps make wifey happy. ;) and games, games, games. (try pingus, Hex-a-Hop and numpty physics) Like: You only buy this device ONCE. ALL THE SOFTWARE IN THE APP STORE IS FREE!!! Good sound, tiny qwerty keyboard, fast WiFi, touch screen or stylus. Canola application alone makes this device worth more than the going price as a media player. Kickstand for video, can pair with a BlueTooth keyboard for efficient note taking (though If you're going to buy a keyboard anyway, look at the older N800 instead because of price, memory capacity, and FM radio tuner). E-book reader, PDF viewer, desktop applets like: RSS, weather, ToDo/calendar. Good batterylife, customizable UI, phone tethering. Decent free GPS with free map updates. Also VERY hacker friendly if you are, or want to be one. Standard Nokia charger so you may already have a spare or 3. Multitasking, great sound quality, fantastic screen and on-screen keyboard (not to mention slide out keyboard) are all MUCH better than iPod touch or iPhone and is far more readable. The provided car kit is also good. Dislike: It is slow compared to a netbook, but speed is about equal to iPhone. Some of the best apps are not installed by default. Video is not available in Skype. :( Package manager can not que multiple installs like other Linux distributions, (though it can update multiple?) so setup can take long enough to get your wife upset with you. GPS acquisition takes forever each time you first start it (this is the single biggest disappointment). The protective sleeve is welcome, but not ideal. Too much sample media (songs, videos, pictures, PDFs etc...) eating up (solid state) hard drive space. Oh yeah, the camera stinks. Bottom line: If any of the following apply to you; a. like to tinker b. like Linux (O.K. Almost nobody likes linux. Most people Love it or hate it) c. like to own a device instead of it owning you d. like Free app stores e. like to be different f. like a device that is not a phone g. like a device with a community h. can not afford or can not wait for the new N900 later this year i. want to participate in the Open Maps Project Then you probably should own one of these.Read full review
