Fantastic concept with wireless!! It set up instantly with win7, I didn't have to do a thing... Prints so fast it's amazing! BUT, I suspect that my particular printer is one of the "lemons" that escape quality control now and then. It refuses to print in color as all of the (brand new) ink cartridges are dry a/o not putting out the ink OR the print head thingie is gummed up and came that way?? It is a brand new product, and because I've had many Canon printers, I recognize this as a top of the line product, so I feel certain that this one is the proverbial lemon... However, I believe that everyone else will be amazed by its performance, as will I once I trade out the print head... it's fast, it's got duplex printing automatically, two paper cartridges- one for plain paper, one for photographs, the colors are all separate so no throwing away half full cartridges just because one color ran out... It is fully wireless and the network feature worked flawlessly!! The built in screen is awesome! I can see exactly how something is going to print, or how it scanned, etc... Menus are easy to read & to use... All in all, once I replace the ink problem via warrantee, I'm going to be extremely happy with mine!! I chose it for the wireless, networking feature to use with my win 7 laptop and so that my kids can connect to it wirelessly when they are home from college... I can connect my laptop, 2 desktops, & anyone who comes here to it via wireless function... it also has a usb port for a tiny usb memory stick to store to when scanning if I don't want to hook it up with a cable to one of my computers... There are virtually no wires from the printer to even my router!! and it picked it up, set up the network, and then set up my laptop with me only having to click YES to authorize it only once!!And, in case I didn't mention it, this is an all in one printer-scanner-copier-fax... with an oversized bed that will print, scan, & copy up to legal sized paper... What I don't like? Obviously the temporary ink issue... But I can see from the usage already that it is a bit of an ink hog... However, the ink cartridges are not horribly expensive so it's not outrageous like some of the HP printers are... Addendum Dec 29, 2010 I received a replacement printer for the "demon/lemon" that I'd purchased via Ebay... It is EVERYTHING I'd hoped it would be... The printing is PERFECT! and it has multiple choices on how to print as well as choosing a default set up (For my normal usuage, I chose duplex printing, fast print, low/average quality to conserve both ink and paper but can easily and quickly change it to higher quality & single sheets for stuff I want to be printed more professionally) It IS totally wireless, simple set up, works flawlessly! Can send wireless commands up to it (on second floor) from my finished basement quite a distance away and where typical wireless signals (cell phone) don't work very well... Also, having the USB feature lets me scan to it and take it to any printer I want to (can't scan without wires or usb) Copies are FAST & GOOD! Ink usage is less than I expected, while still using it up more than I "wish" a printer would use... all in all, an unbelievably fabulous printer... and the price has dropped significantly, making it that much more affordable... Grab one while you still can... The newer models will surely be as good, but far more pricey... naturally... I love mine and I believe readers of this review will as well...Read full review
Top notch printer, can't expect anything better than this. And very cool looking. I had several other Canons as they are the only one I use. HP and Epson have really not been consistent in quality. The LCD screen on this thing is huge and my wife loves to print pictures by looking at them first. I also converted some old 35mm film and slides using the scanner and built in conversion feature which work excellent, particularly when you compare the cost for a service to convert it -- my parents loved that I took their old film and did this. Anyway, great sharp printer, top notch, has all the bells and whistles and features!
Wow. I just bought this printer for my wife--who enjoys photography with her Rebel XTi. We are more than happy with what this printer can do. It prints out photo-quality photos. (We don't see any difference from what the digital kiosk places can do!) Also, the Canon PIXMA MP990 uses six separate cartridges for black, gray, and color printing. Thus, you only have to replace the cartridge that is empty rather than the whole nine yards when you run out of ink. Buyer beware of those "cheaper" printers you get at big retailers, that just have a black and a color cartrige. You'll end up throwing away many half-full cartridges when one color runs out--what a waste. I compared many of canon's offerings and this one came out to be one of the most reasonable for per cartridge cost. (You can get generic ones for right around $6.) The MP line is good for that. The MG line has a much higher per-cartridge ink price. Ok, besides great photos and resonable ink cost, what else do I like about this printer. It also includes an adapter for scanning film negatives and slides--so you can put all your old stuff onto your computer. Also, it has about every card reader you could immagine. My daughter just got an older Canon camera. We couldn't get a newer computer to accept it directly connected. I pulled out the Compact Flash card and put that into the printer. The computer instantly recognized the card and asked me if I wanted to save the images. Wow. I was impressed. No faulty sofware between the printer and computer. This printer also has a wireless networking feature where you can network it to the rest of the computers in your house. I haven't gotten a router yet so I haven't tried this. But someday I will and it will be really handy to print from any machine in the house. The one con that I'd give this all-in-one printer is that it is a bit on the big and heavy side. You'll need a decent sized shelf or stand to put this one one. I have another Canon PIXMA printer that I've been happy with for years. So I am a return costomer who is happy with his second PIXMA purchase. I can highly recommend this printer.Read full review
I needed a printer that would accept 20 mil thick MAGNETIC photo paper and one that has excellent photo printing quality. This works PERFECTLY! It uses a lot of ink but I also print using the best quality setting. When an ink tank needs to be replaced, it lights up and flashes, so there is no mistaking which one to remove from the printer and replace. The tanks have a see-thru window so you can actually see the level of ink that remains in the tank. I was so frustrated with my previous printers jamming because of the thickness of the paper, and now I am a very happy camper -- couldn't be happier!
The quality is fabulous! It's like having your own photo lab. I purchased it because consumer reports rated the Canon's as best quality and they are right. It was relatively easy to install and connect once you figure out your WEP. You can download a application from Canon that will tell you what your WEP is and you need to know that number to use it wirelessly. The instructions are very good & I purchased it brand new from Ebay at almost 1/2 of the advertised retail price. A screaming deal for a great printer.
